Chugga chugga, choo choo.

Step aside, Napa Valley — Southern California’s very own “wine train” is roaring back into action this fall, promising riders a unique experience aboard a restored vintage train.

The 90-minute ride on the “Backcountry Wine Train” takes you through eastern San Diego County’s scenic highlands, making you feel like you’re out in the old west — and organizers promise plenty of “refreshments” along the way.

Along with stunning desert views, the trip also comes with your own individual charcuterie plate and a six-glass wine tasting flight, with options professionally selected by a sommelier featuring local, Southern California wineries and vineyards.

The voyage du vin also features a chance to chat with advanced local sommelier Lisa Redwine — and sweet treat macaroons from a popular San Diego bakery.

You need to be 21 to hop on board, but the wine train also accommodates those who don’t drink. A non-drinker ticket includes a six-glass tasting flight of handcrafted, nonalcoholic beverages.

The train offers three price points. For $100 per person, you get access to premium class, where you’ll ride on a restored 1920s train cart at a table that accommodates up to four guests.

A first class ticket will set you back $150 per person. There, you’ll receive an additional glass of sparkling wine or nonalcoholic cider. Two-person or four-person tables are available for this experience.

First class guests also have access to the trains the open-air platform and the parlor area.

The train’s most luxurious option, the “VIP on the Robert Peary” grants you access to the train’s VIP presidential passenger car. You can book the car with up to 8 friends for $250 per person.

In your luxe VIP car, you and your friends will received personalized table-side service by your very own sommelier. The catch? You have to book the entire car for access to this private experience.

The Backcountry Wine Train will make two departures on October 4th, one at 12 p.m. and one at 3 p.m. The train departs from the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum, which works to preserve the history of classic train travel.

Located 50 miles east of San Diego, the museum houses over 100 pieces of historic railroad equipment,  including steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars and cabooses.
