A new aircraft is coming in hot.

JetZero, the California-based aerospace company, is in the midst of ejecting Boeing from the game with its newest prototype — the Z4. The aircraft is a blended-wing-body, and it’s aimed at disrupting air travel.

The Z4 is set apart from the traditional tube-and-wing design most airliners have today. JetZero’s new model blends the wings and body into one surface. This creates an aerodynamic lift and could help conserve fuel.

The Long Beach company is taking on Boeing’s 767 — a wide-body plane with 181 and 375 seats. The Z4 is set to carry 250 passengers with a substantially lower fuel burn. JetZero plans on up to 50% greater fuel efficiency than similar, conventional aircraft.

Passengers will also see more legroom as the design calls for wider aisles, better seating layouts, and less stuffy boarding. The Wall Street Journal says the plane will have four aisles, instead of three, and can fly nearly 10,000 feet higher than other airliners.

And no more fighting over storage; the plane is set to have its own overhead luggage compartment for each seat. Gone are the days of passengers bumping into your arm waiting for the toilet; the planes come with a dedicated waiting space.

Customers will even see longer-range flights given the concept’s more efficient aerodynamics. This means longer flights without needing more fuel.

The WSJ also reported that just last week JetZero secured a $3 billion deal with the U.S. Export-Import Bank with the contingency that the company will build its first factory in the US. The move is part of its Make More in America Initiative, a financing program to “revitalize U.S. manufacturing.”

It’s reported that JetZero’s Z4 is also partially funded by the U.S. Air Force after scoring a $235 million contract back in 2023. The test model is being built by California-based Scaled Composites, with its first-ever flight set to take off in 2027.

The company’s president and chief operating officer, Daniel Da Silva, revealed the plane will not be ready for commercial use until at least 2030. JetZero, along with Delta, revealed images at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics forum showing the passenger plane.

“The aircraft interior, the new shape of this aircraft, gives so much space for the crew to deliver a next-level customer experience, and also for the employee experience,” Sangita Sharma, director of Delta’s Sustainable Skies Lab, told folks at the panel.

“Our flight attendants are so excited about the possibility of delivering service like this. Just think about how much more personalized and white-glove it can be,” Sharma added.

Back in April, United inked a deal with the aircraft innovator for up to 200 commercial planes given the Z4 demonstrator meets United’s safety, business and operating requirements. United credited the new model with potentially helping the brand lower its carbon emissions while reducing the cost of operations. It’s unclear if the savings will be passed along to consumers, though.

While passengers are psyched to see the new aircraft, the military is also intrigued as fuel efficiency remains top of mind and where the blended-wing-body design comes in. JetZero claims several military aircraft configurations can be made with the unique design, including air transport and refueling tanker variants.

Collectively, those can account for nearly 60% of the Air Force’s total annual jet fuel consumption.
