A wealthy Palm Springs street has descended into all-out war over a millionaire homeowner’s flashy new gate.

Jordan Smith says he has been locked in battle with his homeowners association after he put up a large blue entrance on the gated Escena Golf Club property when he moved last March.

He claims after he erected it he was inundated with a campaign of harassment, complaints and violation notices, News Channel 3 reported.

Smith alleged a neighbor, who also serves as president of the HOA board, visited his property and a series of disputes followed.

He claimed he was hassled by noise issues and repeated notices claiming his property violated community rules.

Among the issues cited by the association was the color of Smith’s entry gate, which he argues should not be a major concern because much of the structure is made of glass.

“The last thing you want is to come home from a very long day and have an email from lawyers threatening you,” Smith said.

Smith contends the enforcement effort is unfair because other homes in the neighborhood feature gates and entry doors in a variety of colors without facing similar scrutiny.

“It’s obvious to us this is selective enforcement,” he said. “This is a personal vendetta.” The HOA disputes those claims.

In a letter dated Nov. 19, 2025, attorney Laurie Poole, representing the association through the law firm Adams Stirling, wrote that an internal review found insufficient evidence to support Smith’s allegations of harassment and discrimination by board members.

The letter also stated that the association was within its authority to examine whether Smith’s gate, front door and exterior lighting complied with community design requirements.

According to the correspondence, the board considered the matter resolved following its review.

The disagreement comes as the association reportedly works to steer the community toward a more subdued color palette that reflects desert-inspired tones.

HOA representatives have also indicated they are willing to meet directly with Smith in an effort to discuss the situation.

California law generally allows homeowners associations to establish architectural and color standards through the state’s Davis-Stirling Act.

However, legal experts note that such rules must be applied consistently across a community rather than selectively enforced against individual residents.

Despite the HOA’s position, Smith says he no longer believes the matter can be settled privately. He now plans to pursue legal action, setting the stage for a courtroom battle over a disagreement that began with something as simple as the color of a gate.
