They’re getting more beach for their buck.
Hitting exotic sands can come as a gut-punch to one’s savings this summer, as travel costs have skyrocketed since 2025, forcing 52% of frequent flyers to forgo a getaway this year.
Budgeted globetrotters, however, need not sweat nor fret as the world’s top 10 most luxurious, affordable stays have just been revealed via Expedia’s 2026 Island Hot List — a roundup of “next wave” retreats featuring two US vacation destinations.
It’s paradise at a palatable price.
Researchers for the online travel agency analyzed its global flight search data to identify the foremost fast-rising islands that offer visitors alternatives to traditional hotspots, “combining natural beauty, cultural depth, and sometimes better value,” per the July report.
The insiders assigned each must-see a specific superlative, distinguishing one location from the other based on social media buzz, lodging selections and Google search trends.
Serene, scenic St. Lucia secured the No. 1 spot.
Lauded as the best oasis for “romantic escapes,” boasting a 125% year-over-year boost in travel interest, the Caribbean island “stands out for couples with its secluded resorts, dramatic scenery and soft adventure tailored for romance,” raved the experts.
A-listers have long lionized the haven as one of the planet’s sweetest stops. “The Odyssey” star Matt Damon, 55, and wife Luciana Barroso, 49, even laid out $1 million to toast their nuptials on the island’s famed Sugar Beach resort.
Portugal’s Porto Santo, Madeira, scored the second-place slot in the ranking, earning the medal as the best place for “wellness & relaxation.”
Revered as the “Golden Island,” the land, garnering an 85% surge in interest this year, is described as a “quieter alternative to mainland Europe’s busiest beach destinations, known for its golden sands and relaxed pace,” say the specialists.
Praslin Island in the Seychelles landed the third position on the podium, taking, perhaps, the steamiest title of them all: The best place for lovers.
“Protected landscapes, rare wildlife, and untouched beaches are drawing travelers seeking immersive natural beauty,” said the pros, extolling the locale for its luscious allure.
For American jet-setters who prefer living it up locally, Culebra, Puerto Rico, rated the best island for “water adventures,” and Sanibel Island, Florida, the finest “family escapes,” ranked seventh and eighth, respectively.
Behind the top 10 countdown, both Cape Verde — a stunning African utopia, rising as the “ultimate soccer-inspired” hub amid the 2026 FIFA World Cup frenzy — and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas — praised as the best “private island for cruises” — received honorable acknowledgements for their niche appeal.
“Islands don’t just satisfy the urge to get away; they can also be one of the smartest vacation values,” Melanie Fish, Vice President of Public Relations, Expedia Group Brands, said in a statement. “The list was finalized until two destinations generated so much buzz from cruise travelers and soccer fans that we had to give them awards of their own.”
