Murder in a Small Town is returning for a second season — but is every cast member coming back?
Based on novels written by L.R. Wright, Murder in a Small Town follows a police chief named Karl (Rossif Sutherland) who — along with the help of others, including his girlfriend Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk) — investigates mysterious murders.
The Fox show made a big effort when it came to balancing those star-studded guest appearances, the weekly mysteries and the romance.
“It’s funny because I always feel like the title gives it all away. But it’s a murder mystery show. It’s a detective who is new to this small community, and he is basically confronting the fact that all of a sudden there are a whole bunch of murders,” Sutherland quipped during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly in September 2024. “And he has to solve them. But it’s also set in a gorgeous setting because we shot on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. It’s beautiful there. It’s on the ocean and there are trees and it’s gorgeous.”
He continued: “The other part of our show is that it’s a love story. It’s a love story between Cassandra and Karl. It is them trying to find their way and find something that’s lasting and meaningful.”
The show was officially renewed for a second season after its premiere. Keep scrolling to see who is — and isn’t — coming back:
Rossif Sutherland
If not for Sutherland’s character Karl, there would be no one to solve the cases in town so it feels safe to say that he’s returning.
Kristin Kreuk
The same goes for Kreuk as Cassandra because what would Karl — or the rest of Us — do without her on the show?
Marcia Gay Harden
Harden is joining season 2 as Mayor Christie Holman, who was described as “a beloved community figure, a practicing doctor, and a savvy political operator.” While the mayor “claims to have the town’s best interests at heart, her personal agenda could cause problems for Karl and Cassandra.”
Mya Lowe
After being introduced as Corporal Edwina Yen in season 1, Lowe is expected to reprise the role as Karl’s coworker.
Savonna Spracklin
Karl’s team is also made up of Isabella, who will likely return in season 2.
Aaron Douglas
Sergeant Sid Sokolowski was — and will continue to be — Karl’s second‑in‑command but viewers were worried when he previously hinted at a retirement.
Fritzy-Klevans Destine
The police force was rounded out by Destine’s Constable Andy Kendrick, who is also planned to make a return in season 2.
Dakota Guppy
Murder in a Small Town offered a glimpse into Karl’s personal life through his relationship with daughter Holly, played by Guppy.
Bethany Brown
According to the official character description, Brown will be playing Corporal Laila Jackson, who “used to work with Chief Karl Alberg in Minneapolis, where she was on the detective track.” She is referred to as a highly talented cop with a lot of baggage.
“A recovering alcoholic, Jackson has been part of the Gibsons PD for a couple of months and has quickly established herself as a valuable teammate and colleague,” the description continued. “But the overload caused by the department’s critical understaffing will begin to take a toll threatening to set loose all of Jackson’s old demons.”
Marci T. House
House is joining season 2 as a medical examiner who “works tirelessly and pays attention to detail.” Clyburn is aware of Karl “by reputation but has not worked with him until now. The jury is out, as far as she’s concerned — until Alberg’s methods and his integrity begin to win her over.”
Joshua Close
Close will play an unhoused man whose “appearance makes him seem scarier than he is.”
“Prone to anxiety and lashing out when backed into a corner, Todd is actually an avid and insightful reader who spends his time at the local library,” the synopsis noted. “A confrontation in town leads to police involvement and the discovery that Todd may have been connected to a violent crime. But was he a witness … or something more than that?”
