The college football world was rocked by the abrupt firing of University of Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday, December 10 — and left even more stunned about what came next.
Moore, 39, was terminated on Wednesday after two seasons as the head coach of the Wolverines after the school found “credible evidence” that Moore had engaged in an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member.
“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement.
Moore has been married to his wife, Kelli Moore, since 2015 and the couple share three daughters: Shiloh, Solei and Sadie.
Shortly after his firing was announced, it was revealed that Moore had been taken into police custody as the result of an assault investigation.

How Did Michigan Learn of Sherrone Moore’s Alleged ‘Inappropriate Relationship?’
Michigan first investigated Moore and the staff member over the summer, but both denied having a personal relationship, Michigan journalist John U. Bacon reported in a Thursday, December 11 appearance on Good Day Detroit.
That changed when the staffer “brought receipts” to the Michigan administration on Wednesday morning, which Bacon said included “the text messages, the emails, documents and so on, laying out the details of their relationship and the conflicts thereof.”
Even before that, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports there were “lots of whispers and speculations about various gossipy, salacious items” in the weeks leading up to Moore’s firing, but the university was able to find no evidence of wrongdoing.
Was Sherrone Moore Arrested?
Moore was taken into police custody shortly before the University of Michigan announced his firing, according to multiple sources.
The Pittsfield Police Department responded to an address on the 3000 block of Ann Arbor-Saline Road at 4:10 p.m. on Wednesday “for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault,” according to a press release.
A suspect on scene — who The Detroit News reported to be Moore — was taken into custody.
Moore’s termination was announced at 4:43 p.m.
According to online court records, Moore was booked at the Washtenaw County Jail at 8:30 p.m.
Why Was Sherrone Moore Arrested?
911 audio obtained by TMZ on Thursday revealed that the woman who called police accused Moore of “attacking” her. Bacon added that the woman accused Moore of threatening to harm her and himself with a knife. She also accused the former coach of having stalked her “for months.”
What Was Sherrone Moore Charged With?
At an arraignment hearing on Friday, December 12, Moore was charged with one count of third-degree felony home invasion, one count misdemeanor stalking related to a domestic relationship and one count misdemeanor breaking and entering.
Moore was granted $25,000 bail and ordered to wear a GPS tether. He was also told to have no contact with the staff member and to continue mental health treatment.
Who Did Sherrone Moore Allegedly Have a Relationship With?
The identity of the staff member at the center of the allegations is unknown.
“There had been lots of whispers and speculations about various gossipy, salacious items with the school here dating back weeks,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Thursday, December 11. “I believe the school looked into these situations and found no evidence whatsoever of any wrongdoing.”
Schefter, 58, continued, “But, if the school is going to take a step on Wednesday that it did, and announce that it is firing Sherrone Moore for cause, and saying he had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer, then, clearly, something this week developed that the school felt like it had irrefutable evidence, and was left with no other choice.”
What Happens to Michigan Football After Sherrone Moore?
Biff Poggi will take over as Michigan’s interim head coach, the university announced.
As an associate coach this season, Poggi, 66, filled in for Moore for two games while Moore was suspended for his role in a sign stealing investigation.
Poggi was previously the head coach at the University of Charlotte for two seasons.
Michigan is currently preparing to play in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against the University of Texas on New Year’s Eve.
