If you thought blowing candles out was a tradition reserved for your birthday cake, well, you’re about to be proven wrong.

Because a new trend has emerged within the wedding world, which means couples are welcoming married life in a fun new way.

For 30-year-old Sydney bride Amna Khoury, who married her husband Michael last month in a gorgeous city celebration, there’s one moment that stood out.

“I thought, why not do something different, rather than doing the traditional cutting of the wedding cake,” Khoury told news.com.au.

Taking to Pinterest and TikTok, the bride searched for ways she could add a spark to her cake – and then she literally did.

She decided to place candles on her 1.2 metre long rectangular, white wedding cake.

“Blowing out the candles has more meaning behind it,” she said.

“It symbolises partnership, especially if you’re doing it with your partner. It means shared intention and moving forward.”

By starting on either end of the cake and meeting in the middle with your newly married spouse, couples are “coming together and meeting in the middle” in “understanding and equality”.

Her 250 guests loved the special moment.

“They really enjoyed it, and for us it was so unique and memorable.”

While it’s currently still an unconventional idea, the wedding industry is preparing to light up more wedding cakes in the near future.

On social media, the number of couples popping candles into the white frosting is growing.

Aussie influencer, Jacquie Alexander, recently jumped on the trend too, blowing out candles on her cake at the end of last year.

She described the idea as “one of my favourite moments” from her day.

Commenters on her video praised the sentiment behind the trend.

“Wait, this is the best wedding cake idea that exists on the internet,” a user praised.

“This is so awesome. We’re officially putting it in our wedding plans,” a second shared.

A third revealed: “We did this! It was so fun and also looked gorg.”

For Sydney wedding stylist, Jimmy Naumovski, the demand for candles in cakes is on the up within his professional experience.

“We’ve definitely seen growing interest in the trend, with more couples asking for reception moments that feel unique and entertaining, and this trend fits perfectly into that shift towards modern, experience-driven weddings,” Mr Naumovski told news.com.au.

It stems from the idea that couples are looking for “immersive experiences” to make their day feel a little more special.

“Couples are increasingly looking for wedding moments that feel personal, playful and interactive, rather than overly traditional or staged,” he explained.

“The candle-blowing trend creates a really fun atmosphere during the reception and feels more candid than the classic cake-cutting moment. Social media, particularly TikTok, has also played a huge role in influencing modern weddings, with couples wanting moments that translate well on video and feel memorable for guests.”
