With the crunching of leaves and pumpkin spice treats comes a new season of theater for kids that will appeal to everyone in the family.
First, head to the Upper East Side for some returning faves. This fall, 92NY’s Theater for Young Audiences has put together a jam-packed schedule that includes nine shows, the most performances in any season.
Book tickets for the kickoff — fan favorite “Red Riding Hood” (Sept. 14 to Oct. 12), followed by “Junie B. Jones, The Musical” (Sept. 27 to Oct. 26) and “Alice in Wonderland” (Oct. 25 to Nov. 9) — all back by popular demand.
Celebrating its 30th season this fall, the New Victory Theater has three new productions beginning with “Snow White” (Nov. 1 to 9), featuring a heroine trying to escape her stepmother, with a twist — she enlists the help of some forgetful forest-dwelling vegans. “Mario the Maker Magician 2.0” (Nov. 15 to 30) is a spellbinding mixture of mad scientist pranks and sleight of hand, and, rounding out the season, your family will be mesmerized by the circus fun of “Merry Mayhem” from Australia’s Circus Oz (Dec. 5 to 28).
Celebrating 25 years, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” the musical is back at New World Stages starting Nov. 17 and running till Feb. 15. Grammy nominee Kevin McHale (“Glee”) stars in this fast-paced, witty and touching musical that’s been a crowd-pleaser since it debuted on Broadway in 2005.
Heading to Broadway for the first time, however, is master illusionist Rob Lake. He’s taking the stage to perform his original illusions, joined by none other than Kermit the Frog and some of his other Muppet friends. These beloved puppets are sure to bring their own wackiness to Lake’s show-stopping moments on stage. This limited run at the Broadhurst Theatre goes from Nov. 6 through Jan. 18.
Watch New York City scenes unfold onstage in the new Broadway musical, “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York),” which debuts at the Long-acre Theatre on Nov. 20. The show is destined to appeal to the older kids in your family who will laugh — and maybe get a little emo — as the two main characters do some last-minute errands for a fraught family wedding, all the while navigating their way around New York City.
This fall, the Perelman Performing Arts Center presents the Old Vic’s Tony-winning production of the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol.” The unique staging of this classic has played to sold-out shows in London every holiday season for nine years running. This limited run is from Nov. 23 until Dec. 28.
Dance the night away
Book a night at the “Mamma Mia!” Experience, a musical-inspired theme room perched high above the city on the 44th floor of the newly opened Hyatt Regency Times Square.
Tweens will delight in checking out an actual costume and boots from the original Broadway show (back for a six-month engagement) and sleep in a room that has been completely transformed into a Greek retreat, bedecked with white stone-like walls and accent shutters. Everyone will feel as if they’ve stepped into the Villa Donna hotel.
Best of all, just shout “dancing queen” to get the tune of that name to blast from a hidden audio player and, with the start of the Abba tune, sequin-covered curtains appear along with dazzling disco lights. Let the in-room dancing begin.
