A three-year-old Modesto girl’s drowning at a popular reservoir in Central California is now being investigated as a homicide as authorities search for answers as to what happened to her.
Lailah Rosillo died at Don Pedro Reservoir — also known as Lake Don Pedro — in Tuolumne County more than a week ago.
During a Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, Sheriff David Vasquez talked about how the tragedy has rocked the community, sharing that her death is being treated as a homicide.
“That is an active investigation right now,” Sheriff Vasquez said, per mymotherlode.com.
“We are treating it as a homicide.”
“We don’t have all of the logistics and all this information from all the people who are around there.”
“We’re still gathering that information, which is a common protocol for us to do whenever there’s a death involving a child,” Vasquez added about Rosillo.
The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call on July 18 about a missing child who may have drowned in Fleming Meadows Lagoon at the reservoir.
When emergency personnel arrived on scene they found witnesses had located the child and CPR was being administered, according to a post on social media from the sheriff’s office.
“Despite the quick response and efforts of bystanders, deputies, firefighters, and medics, the child could not be revived,” the release read.
“She was pronounced deceased before she could be transported by air to a higher level of medical care.”
A GoFundMe later identified the little girl as Rosillo.
“What was meant to be a joyful family camping trip became an unimaginable nightmare that no parent, sibling or grandparent should ever have to endure,” Yolanda Muro, a family friend, said in the GoFundMe, that’s no longer available.
Muro described Rosillo as “a bright, beautiful little girl whose smile brought happiness to everyone around her.”
“She was deeply loved by her family and leaves behind an older brother, an older sister, and a baby brother, all of whom miss her beyond words,” Muro added.
Authorities have called on the public’s help in solving what happened to the little girl, specifically seeking “photos or videos that may show the child on a raft or boat with other children” from that day.
The department would also like to speak to witnesses who may have seen the child before she was pulled out of the water and any photo of the giant raft they believe she was playing on before her death.
