The Rookie is one step closer to announcing who wins the race for district attorney, but actor Shawn Ashmore says there are more twists and turns to come.

“It’s a very interesting conclusion to the story. I will say that,” Ashmore — who plays Wesley Evers, one of the two Los Angeles attorneys running for DA on the ABC series — exclusively told Us Weekly this month. “Whether he wins or loses, it’s gonna be a challenge for him.”

During the Monday, March 23, episode of The Rookie, viewers began the two-day countdown to see whether Wesley or his colleague, ADA Vivian Eckert (Necar Zadegan), will come out victorious during the DA race.

While Wesley and his wife, Detective Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz), tried to take the high road all episode, they faced more than one challenge in the latest episode.

First, their former foe Elijah Stone (Brandon Jay McLaren) blindsided the couple on the courthouse steps by claiming that Wesley cheated on Angela with his ex-fiancée and another villain on The Rookie, Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan).

Monica eventually held a press conference to combat the allegations, denying that she had an affair with Wesley — although he did previously cheat on her when they were together.

Once that bullet was dodged, Angela was faced with a moral quandary: leak the dirt she was sent by an AI chatbot about Wesley’s opponent, let the chips fall where they may.

She ultimately chose to throw out the incriminating information on Vivian — but Ashmore teased that the race’s conclusion won’t be without its controversy.

“It’s not super clean,” Ashmore, 46, told Us of how the DA race ends, noting that Wesley and Angela, however, do “hold each other accountable about doing the right thing and trying to fight the good fight.”

The actor explained that no matter the outcome on the Monday, March 30, episode, viewers will continue to see how “passionate” Wesley is about the law and “doing the right thing.”

Ashmore confessed that Wesley might have a “hero complex,” but in the end he is always trying to better the city he lives and works in — even if it affects his family with Angela.

“Whether he wins or loses, he’s going to have to deal with the repercussions of that,” Ashmore said. “Whether it’s putting his family in a tough position or dealing with the disappointment, you know, depending on what happens. It’s a tough spot and an interesting spot, either way.”

Diaz, meanwhile, exclusively told Us that the outcome of the DA’s race will also “put a spotlight on her” at the police station.

“She’s going to be under scrutiny. And I don’t think that was something that she particularly wanted,” the actress, 40, revealed. “There’s also, like conflict of interest, that could affect her relationships with her colleagues.”

Diaz added that Angela and Wesley’s two children will play a part in how she moves forward after the race.

“Putting herself and her family out there is something that makes her very uncomfortable and the issues that arise from her colleagues isn’t really the ideal situation,” she concluded.

The Rookie airs on ABC Mondays at 10 p.m. ET.
