Sean Kaufman is here for comments about his glow up.
Kaufman, who plays Steven Conklin on Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, has seen fans’ comments about his look in season 3 and exclusively explained to Us Weekly exactly how it came to be.
Kaufman explained that he was actually not the mastermind behind his long, curly bangs, but gave all the credit to showrunner Jenny Han — also the author of the beloved book series of the same name — who had a vision and ran with it.
“Jenny and I had a long conversation about it, which is really funny,” Kaufman, 25, told Us. “She came up to me one day and I think she had seen a TikTok where I was playing in a pool. She was like, ‘This is what I want.’”
Kaufman continued, “My hair was wet and short and I was like, ‘What?’ She’s like, ‘Your hair this season. This is what I want and I know it.’”
Trusting Han, 44, with her vision, Kaufman’s next step was getting his straight hair to curl. “In very Korean style, they gave me a perm,” he explained. “They cut my hair and gave me a perm.”
Kaufman gushed that he’s seen positive fan reactions to his new ‘do, which he said is “always funny.”
Recently, a fan ran into Kaufman on a street and told him the series should actually be called “The Summer the Brother Turned Pretty,” which he was into. “I was like, ‘Let’s go,’” Kaufman told Us.
After getting the perm, Kaufman only needed minimal time to style his hair before filming. “I just wake up and kind of walk out the house,” he explained.
In season 1 of TSITP, Steven parted his brunette strands to the side and styled his bangs so that some strands flopped over his forehead.
The following season, he grew his hair slightly out and parted it more down the middle with his bangs off his forehead.
