Former Succession star Sarah Snook prepared for her Broadway debut the Taylor Swift way.
“No alcohol, no caffeine. Sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep. And I do my lines at pace on a treadmill, you know,” Snook, 37, told The New Yorker in a profile published on Sunday, March 16. “I heard that [Taylor did that] and thought, ‘That’s a genius idea. I’m gonna do that.’”
Swift, 35, performed her record-breaking Eras Tour, a three-hour concert, across multiple continents between 2023 and 2024. To prepare for the impressive feat, she overhauled her workout routine to boost her stamina.
“Every day I would run on the treadmill, singing the entire set list out loud,” Swift told TIME in December 2023. “Fast for fast songs, and a jog or a fast walk for slow songs. I had three months of dance training because I wanted to get it in my bones. I wanted to be so over-rehearsed that I could be silly with the fans, and not lose my train of thought.”
Snook, meanwhile, recently began performances of her one-woman show, a revival of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, on Broadway in New York City. She previously earned an Olivier Award during the West End run, in which she plays 26 different characters.
Snook took on the “marathon”-like show when her daughter was only 6 months old.
“I had already agreed [to do the show before she was born]. My husband has said, ‘If either of us had seen the show, he would have convinced me not to do it,’” Snook recalled to the outlet, referring to husband Dave Lawson. “He’s already got a kid. He knew how hard it was going to be. Ignorance is bliss. You go, ‘Oh, this will be fine.’”
She added, “But I think, to be honest, probably just in the framework of living as straight and narrow as possible — that probably wouldn’t be possible without a baby. It’s valuing sleep, needing to keep nutrition up, because she’s taking a lot of it from breast-feeding.”
It has also been crucial for the actress to stay healthy throughout the stage run.
“Keeping myself healthy for being a new mom also kept myself healthy for doing this marathon,” Snook said. “Otherwise, it’s very easy to go, ‘Had a big night tonight. Yeah, I’ll have a drink. Yeah, I’ll have a glass of wine.’ And then you’re going to bed at 5 and sleeping until 3. With a baby, you cannot do that.”
