The latest edition of the European Railway Station Index is out now – and the best major hub on the continent is Switzerland’s Zürich Hbf.

Issued by the Consumer Choice Center, the new ranking evaluated 60 of Europe’s busiest railway stations looking at the percentage of services which are delayed and the average wait time.

It also took into account factors such as the number of in-station services, accessibility options, whether or not the station has free wifi, national and local railway coverage and ticket types.

Switzerland “continues to set the standard for reliability”, with a national punctuality rate of 94.1%. Zürich Hbf came in first place overall, with just 4% of its train services delayed, while Bern Hbf was joint fifth with a delay percentage of 1.8%. Although ranked 14th overall, the most punctual trains departed from Luzern Hbf, which had just 0.3% of its services delayed.

On the flip side, Germany’s performance “continued to deteriorate” compared to previous editions.

Of the bottom 30 stations, 15 are in Germany, and the highest ranked station from the country is Berlin Hbf in 18th, where 61.1% of services are delayed and the average wait time is 20 minutes.

Europe-wide, the average delay rate is 29% – in Germany, it is 49.4%. Similarly, the average wait time on the continent is 8.06 minutes, versus 14.74 minutes in Germany.

Polish stations on the rise

For 2026, 10 new stations joined the ranking thanks to increased passenger numbers.

Two of the top five best performers among these newbies come from Poland: Kraków Główny in first place (ninth overall), and Poznań Główny in third (13th overall).

Consumer Choice Center note that Kraków’s main station boasts direct routes to Warsaw, Zakopane, Łódź, Gdańsk and Katowice domestically, as well as top destinations like Berlin,

Munich, Vienna and Prague elsewhere on the continent.

Kraków Główny is also fully integrated with the Galeria Krakowska shopping centre, giving travellers access to plenty of shops and restaurants. Praise was also lavished on the station for having integrated bus and tram services, written and verbal station announcements, and a first-class lounge.

Looking ahead, Consumer Choice Center points to the ongoing modernisation of the network with a plan for an additional 4,700km of new track “ultimately promises to transform Polish rail into one of the most modern rail networks in Europe”.

Time for a rail escape to Poland, anyone?
