A 27-year-old woman was killed when a Tesla she was in crashed into scaffolding in Midtown Manhattan early Wednesday, with the injured female driver taken into police custody at a nearby hospital, police said.
The 2024 Tesla hit a mailbox at around 2:43 a.m. before striking scaffolding outside 315 Madison Ave. just before 3 a.m., traveling several blocks east along East 42nd Street before coming to a stop at the intersection of Second Avenue, the NYPD said.
Pictures from the scene show the heavily damaged Tesla at the intersection Wednesday morning.
Both occupants were rushed to a nearby hospital where the 27-year-old passenger was pronounced dead.
The driver, also a 27-year-old woman, is in stable condition and in police custody, but has not been charged, according to police.
No identities have been released pending the notification of families.
Officials have not said what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and the investigation is continuing.
