An NYPD sergeant was struck by a suspect in a stolen car and went airborne during a multi-borough chase Sunday evening — before another officer shot the unwieldy suspect, police said.
The crazed carjacker is accused of striking several officers after being surrounded by cops in the Fordham section of the Bronx and trying to break through, Aneudy Castillo, Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Bronx North, said at a press conference Sunday night.
Authorities had received an alert from a license plate reader that a silver Kia Sport with New Jersey license plates that had been stolen on Saturday was traveling through Washington Heights around 5:35 p.m., Castillo said.
After receiving another alert that showed the stolen car traveling through the Bronx, the NYPD’s Community Response Team rushed to track the driver and discovered the vehicle traveling on East Fordham Road.
The officers secretly trailed the stolen Kia until the car stopped and let a passenger out before ultimately stopping in front of a building on East Fordham Road between Webster and Decatur Avenues, police added.
Six unmarked cop cars surrounded the Kia, as police officers jumped out to plead with the driver to get out of the car.
The alleged carjacker then reversed and hit an unmarked police car, and multiple members of the NYPD — before putting the Kia into drive and striking a sergeant, sending him flying to the ground, sources and cops said.
Another cop, who climbed onto an unmarked vehicle to avoid being struck, pulled out a gun to shoot the suspect as he tried to reverse with multiple officers still surrounding the car, Castillo described.
Multiple officers, including the cop who was plowed into, were taken to the hospital with various injuries in stable condition.
The alleged carjacker was transported to St Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.
The reckless driver was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including felony assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a firearm for allegedly shooting a man in the neighborhood in February, Castillo said.
The NYPD posted on X to urge residents to avoid the vicinity of East Fordham Road between Marion Avenue and Decatur Avenue and to expect “delays and heavy traffic in the area.”
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
