Get a pizza the action.
New York City is taking back the title of pizza capital of the world as Manhattan chain Mama’s Too was just named the best pizza on the planet by Time Out magazine.
The outlet’s network of editors and writers sampled some of the most popular pizza joints from around the world — in a variety of pie types, including New York, Detroit and Neapolitan-style.
And the big cheese of cheesy pizza is right here in New York City, of course.
Specifically, critics chose the Cacio e Pepe slice from Mama’s Too, with locations in the West Village and on the Upper West Side, as the best of the best. It features whipped mascarpone, aged mozzarella, Pecorino Romano and Parmigiano-Reggiano.
Apart from the pasta-inspired pie, the by Mama’s Too owner Frank Tuttolomondo also boasts the Angry Nonna, featuring hot soppressata, Calabrian chili oil and hot honey; the Bufalini, which is topped with beer-battered chicken; and the Poached Pear with sweet gorgonzola and hot honey.
In her review of Mama’s Too, Time Out New York food and drink editor Morgan Carter recalled being “tempted by a square that was quite literally hidden under a snowstorm of Pecorino and Parmigiano-Reggiano shreds.”
“One quick melt in the oven later, and all the flavors sang in perfect harmony – creamy and light mascarpone, a bit of funk from the aged mozzarella and all the tangy, stretchy cheesiness I could ever ask for,” she wrote.
“Keep in mind, there is fresh cracked black pepper on here, so chew gingerly if you are worried about any sensitive molars.”
Only one other pizzeria in the United States made the Top 18: Milly’s Pizza in the Pan in Chicago, featuring a thick-crusted pie that “represents the pinnacle of Chicago’s most iconic dish.”
