NYC drivers beware — you’re 20% more likely to get into a car crash on this day

Now, this is enough to drive New York City motorists nuts.

In the city that doesn’t sleep — but where sirens blare, brakes screech and horns beep — drivers are 20% more likely to be involved in a car accident on Saturdays than any other day of the week, according to frightening new data.

Weekenders: beware of fender benders.

“Saturday tops the list as New York’s most hazardous driving day with 557 collisions recorded,” study authors for Metropolitan Shuttle, a nationwide charter bus service, revealed in the report. “This represents 17.8% of all weekly traffic incidents and exceeds the daily average by approximately 20%.“

Researchers examined traffic collision information across New York in 2023, per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), to determine which days posed the greatest risk to drivers.

Using statistics gathered from NHTSA’s Fatality and Injury Reporting System Tool (FIRST), the team calculated the number of fatal crashes on each day of the week. The days were then ranked from the lowest to the highest number of crashes.

Investigators found that the potential for vehicular wrecks steadily increases from Tuesday —  the safest driving day in New York with just 388 collisions — to Friday and beyond.

While most 9-to-5ers in and around the Big Apple revere each Friday as a mini holiday, as it marks the end of a traditional workweek, it also ranks as the second riskiest day to hop behind the wheel.

The experts discovered that a whopping 502 recorded collisions occur during the celebrated 24 hours.

Sundays secure the No. 3 spot as the worst day for whipping through city streets, with 500 recorded collisions.

“The combined weekend total of 1,057 collisions represents just under one-third of all weekly traffic incidents in New York,” analysts explained, warning that the carefree revelry most folks enjoy after clocking out at the end of the week can amplify the risk of experiencing a wreck.

“Factors, such as recreational driving, social activities and potentially impaired driving, contribute to the increased risk,” said the insiders before unveiling a surprisingly hazardous day for a spin.

“Monday defies the weekly progression pattern with 422 collisions, making it more dangerous than both Tuesday and Wednesday despite following the high-risk weekend,” noted the specialists. “This suggests a potential ‘Monday effect,’ where drivers are tired or otherwise impaired.”

Glenn Orloff, the CEO of Metropolitan Shuttle, tells The Post that he hopes the study gives Gothamites a solid guideline for the best times to drive.

“The stark difference between weekday and weekend collision rates underscores the importance of making informed choices about when to travel,” said Orloff. “Drivers should consider adjusting non-essential travel plans to avoid the highest-risk days when possible.

“For those who must travel on [Saturdays], extra caution is advised, particularly during peak hours.”

Here’s a ranking of the most dangerous days for driving in New York.

Day of the Week  Number of Collisions  Percentage of Weekly Total  Comparison to Daily Average
Saturday  557  17.18%  +20.30%
Friday  502  15.48%  +8.42%
Sunday  500  15.42%  +7.99%
Thursday  465  14.34%  +0.43%
Monday  422  13.02%  -8.86%
Wednesday  408  12.58%  -11.88%
Tuesday  388  11.97%  -16.20%
