A North Carolina man obsessed with his teen girlfriend killed her as they drove down a highway following his pressure campaign to carry out a murder-suicide pact.
J’Kobe Tre’shon Ramseur, 23, and Justice Wells, 19, were found suffering from gunshot wounds inside the teen’s black Kia on the side of I-77 in Mooresville, NC, on Sunday, according to Mooresville Police.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting on the Exit 35 ramp just after 4:30 p.m. when they came across the pulled-over sedan riddled with four bullet holes coming from inside the car.
Ramseur allegedly pulled a gun on Wells as she was driving, but she fought back as he fired off a few shots, Morresville Police Chief Ron Campurciani told reporters Tuesday, according to WCNC.
“We have dashcam video that shows the vehicle swaying all over the road. In fact, a tire pops off at one point because the car is being so erratic,” Campurciani revealed.
Wells is believed to have been shot in the head, with the bullet going through the driver’s side window.
“The other shots make no sense where they’re located except for the fact that she was probably in a struggle with him to take the gun away, that’s what it looks like,” Campurciani said. “Looks like they were in a struggle and he was just firing.”
Ramseur suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the temple with the bullet still in his head.
Both occupants were transported to Carolinas Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries.
Wells was pronounced dead at the hospital on Wednesday, according to WBTV.
The couple had been in a “real tumultuous relationship” for some time when Ramseur began texting Wells Sunday at midnight while she was at her overnight job, Campurciani said.
“They’ve been on and off for a while. It’s been a real tumultuous relationship between them from what we’ve been able to determine. There’s been reports of domestic violence in surrounding counties involving these two,” he said.
The text chain continued with a “whole bunch of messages” sent through the morning until 8 a.m. when Ramseur brought up a murder-suicide pact, Campurciani revealed without providing additional details.
“He kept pressuring her and pressuring her to pick him up,” he said, adding the last message was sent at about 2:30 p.m., two hours before the shooting.
Ramseur was initially charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder, but the charges were upgraded to First-Degree Murder after Wells’ death.
Campurciani issued a frightful warning following the deadly suspected domestic violence attack.
“As a father of 20-year-old twin girls. Nobody changes. If there’s violence, if somebody puts their hand on you. Once he pushes you, once he shoves you, that’s it. If you think it’s gonna get better, you’re delusional, cause it doesn’t. It gets worse,” he said, trying not to choke up.
“I’m a firm believer that people will treat you exactly how you allow them to treat you, so if you keep letting this stuff go, it’s going to get worse and worse,” the top cop added.
Campurciani described Ramseur as being obsessed with Wells based on messages he had sent her.
“It seems like the ‘if I can’t have you, nobody’s gonna have you’ type of deal,” he said.
Ramseur was a suspect in another crime in the area, but officials didn’t provide any details because the other investigation is ongoing.
“He is well known to authorities in multiple counties.”
