These teens received more than just a diploma at graduation.

More than 30 New Jersey students were offered $74,000 teaching positions at their former school district during their high school commencement ceremonies.

Officials at Newark Public Schools, New Jersey’s largest school district, handed out the 1-year contracts to 34 of their graduates, a majority of whom completed a dual enrollment program that prepared them for careers as educators.

The conditional contracts require each graduate to earn a bachelor’s degree and become certified to teach in the state of New Jersey.

After completing rigorous post-high school studies, the Newark students will return to the district to teach on a $74,000 annual salary, nearly double the worth of the average starting salary in the state.

The average entry-level salary in Newark is approximately $34,200, according to ZipRecruiter estimates.

Thirty-two future teachers attended East Side High School or University High School, completing the Red Hawks Rising Teacher Academy through Montclair State University and the American Federation of Teachers, the school district announced.

“These contracts represent our investment in homegrown talent and a long-term strategy to build a pipeline of teachers who reflect and understand our students,” Newark Public Schools Superintendent Roger León said. “We’re not just celebrating graduates today. We’re welcoming future colleagues.”

Two additional graduates had specialized offers waiting for them as they crossed the stage to receive their diplomas.

Arts High School graduate Miguel Rodriguez Bermudez was called back to the podium by León as he began to walk off stage during his graduation on June 24, according to footage shared by the district.

León told the crowd inside Newark Symphony Hall that the 19-year-old had plans to attend William Paterson University with hopes of becoming a music teacher in the school district.

“Guess what, ladies and gentlemen, here’s a $74,000 contract to Miguel Rodriquez Bermudez,” León said, holding up a framed contract as the teen joyfully jumped up and down.

The ceremonial plaque was handed to Rodriguez Bermudez, who later signed the official contract when his name was called to receive his diploma.

León credited the teen’s mother, who overcame hardships while raising her son and earning the teaching position.

“This is why this happens, your single mom and all of the sacrifices that she did,” León said.

“To all the single moms out there, you keep working hard because greatness comes your way,” he added.

Barringer High School graduate Alliana Abreu was offered an athletic trainer position with the school district upon her completion of the requirements after college.

“This is what it looks like when we invest in our young people, grow our own talent, and build a future that starts at home,” Newark Board of Education President Hasani K. Council said. “These graduates are role models and leaders who will give back to the same schools and neighborhoods that shaped them.”
