New ranking places California metros on world’s happiest places list — but they’re nowhere near the top

It’s not exactly California Dreamin’.

San Francisco and Los Angeles have been named among the world’s 20 happiest destinations — but both Golden State metropolises squeezed onto the list perilously close to the bottom.

The City by the Bay took 17th place with a 67.5 “Happy Place” score, while LA limped in at No. 19 with a score of 61.9, according to a new ranking from Irish travel insurance company JustCover.

The humbling showing left the home state of Disneyland — famously billed as “The Happiest Place on Earth” — with some explaining to do. Anaheim did not appear in the published top 20.

The insurer analyzed more than 1 million online reviews of tourist attractions, entertainment venues, national parks, scenic spots and resorts across 155 popular destinations worldwide.

Researchers measured how frequently travelers used language expressing genuine happiness and joe, then compared those glowing reviews with the total number posted for each destination.

Mexico’s beachside vacation mecca Tulum topped the global rankings with a perfect score of 100, followed by Soufrière, Santa Lucia, with 95.2.

Oaxaca, Mexico, placed third, while Las Vegas landed at No. 4 — with both received rounded scores of 88.

Adding insult to injury, Sin City finished more than 26 points ahead of Los Angeles, despite its decidedly less wholesome nickname.

JustCover credited Vegas’ lofty showing to travelers arriving in celebration mode for weddings, milestone birthdays, restaurants and shows.

Maui rounded out the top five, followed by New York City in sixth place, Chicago, Austin, New Orleans and Miami were among other US destinations that outperformed California’s contenders.

San Francisco narrowly bested Nashville, which finished 18th, while Los Angeles avoided total humiliation by outscoring only Boston among the top 20.

California may have the sunshine, beaches and Disneyland — but it barely secured a seat on the world’s happiest road trip.
