The sister of Minnesota Timberwolves star Naz Reid has died after she was fatally shot on Friday, September 5. She was 28.

Toraya Reid was shot at Paragon Apartment complex in Jackson Township, New Jersey. According to inmate records reviewed by Us Weekly, suspect Shaquille Green, 29, was arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with three separate counts: first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and unlawful use of weapon.

Ocean County records also indicate bail has not been set. Sports Illustrated reported on Sunday, September 7, that Reid and Green were dating at the time of the shooting.

The outlet also reported that Green was seen “running on North New Prospect Road” and taken into custody without incident.

“A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, identified Green – who has been in a dating relationship with Ms. Reid – as the individual responsible for her death,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The pair’s sister, Jakahya Smith, addressed Toraya’s death on Facebook in several posts.

“We always send our condolences and say we could never imagine ourselves in that situation….. and yet here I am,” she wrote on Saturday, September 6. “Facing the unimaginable. Without you by my side I just talked to you last night bro we was ki’ing bout this n**** not even knowing what was waiting on you the very next morning.”

She continued, “I’ll never get over this. I’ll never forgive god for taking you away from me, idk what kind of sick plan that man above has but I know losing you couldn’t have been apart of it. I can’t even phantom putting your name and death in the same sentence. This s**t real so surreal. The whole way home I was just hoping and praying it was some kind of sick joke that you would call me and tell me it wasn’t true. I’m disgusted. I’m hurt. But most of all I’m angry. I will never be okay.”

In a second post, Jakahya added, “Imma say this one time and one time f**king only. My sister has a name. She is not just some girl, She’s not just the nba super star sister. She has a name and that is Toraya Reid. Respect her s**t or don’t mention her at all.”

Naz, who joined the Timberwolves after he signed a two-way contract with the team in 2019, spoke of both his sisters in a 2023 interview with MSP Magazine.

“My older sister is super protective, she treats us like she’s our parent,” he said at the time. “Because I was the only boy, everybody was always paying attention to me because I was playing basketball in another city. So everybody made sure that I was okay.”
