A massive tree-covered island mysteriously emerged in a remote Canadian reservoir before vanishing from sight just weeks later.

The bizarre floating landmass was spotted in British Columbia’s Williston Reservoir — a sprawling man-made lake north of Mackenzie — earlier this month, according to CBC.

Local Rocky Avery said photos and video of the island were taken by a boater and later shared with him before he posted them on social media, where they quickly went viral.

“It was a pretty amazing sight to see, never seen anything like that in my 40 years in this country,” Avery told the outlet.

“There was a big fishing derby coming up, so I wanted to make sure everybody was aware of what was going on. And I wanted BC Hydro to know too that it was out there, just in case it was floating down their way.”

Even BC Hydro — a government-owned utility company that generates and delivers clean hydroelectric power to most of British Columbia — initially questioned whether the mysterious island was real.

Spokesman Bob Gammer said he was skeptical about the strange sighting because advances in generative AI have made it increasingly difficult to determine whether images posted online are authentic.

“It’s certainly something we’ve not heard of before,” Gammer said. “And with not very many people reporting it, it was difficult to locate.”

Satellite imagery dated July 21 eventually confirmed the island was real and floating in the main body of the reservoir west of Finlay Bay, about 60 miles west of the WAC Bennett Dam.

The island was estimated to be about 230 feet wide and 460 feet long, covering roughly 105,000 square feet, nearly the size of two NFL football fields.

But by Aug. 5, the enormous landmass had vanished from satellite imagery.

“We’ve been taking more updated snapshots and we can’t see the object anymore. So it’s disappeared now,” Gammer told CBC. “It doesn’t mean it’s gone to the bottom of the reservoir. It may have returned to a more sheltered area along the shoreline.”

Officials have a theory about how the runaway island emerged in the first place.

Gammer explained driftwood may have accumulated along the shoreline over several years, with plants and trees eventually taking root in the decomposing debris and creating a floating landmass.

The reservoir has been unusually full this year following high winter snowpacks and steady summer rain.

BC Hydro was forced to open the WAC Bennett Dam’s spillways in June and July to release water.

“We haven’t had a full reservoir in 14 years,” Gammer said. “We can’t pinpoint the origin of this floating island [but that’s] one explanation that seems reasonable.”

Avery added that the unusually high water has also washed out shoreline sand dunes popular with quad bikers while dragging more trees and debris into the reservoir than usual.

“There’s areas we would never even drive a boat on before, and now we’re going up over top of it,” he said.

BC Hydro doesn’t expect the island to cause any operational problems but is monitoring the reservoir in case the mysterious landmass resurfaces.

Williston Reservoir was created behind the WAC Bennett Dam in 1968 and is the seventh-largest reservoir in the world.
