An American Airlines passenger says their recent Dallas-to-Philly flight turned into a nightmare after a fellow traveler decided the middle seat was the perfect place to change her baby’s diaper.
The Redditor, posting under the handle @throwfaraway212718, fumed in the r/americanairlines forum that the mother “somehow thought it was a good idea to change her baby’s rancid, s—t-filled diaper on the middle seat between her and her husband.”
The stench, they claimed, wasn’t just noticeable — it “woke multiple people up from a firm sleep.”
As if that weren’t enough, the poster said the parents allegedly left the seat dirty for the next unlucky flyer — failing to wipe up after the change.
The cabin floor didn’t fare much better: the pair reportedly tossed snack wrappers and containers at their feet, despite flight attendants making multiple trash runs.
“The entire cabin reeked for a while,” the witness griped, likening the ordeal to a stinky sundae no one ordered.
But their final jab hit hardest: “Please don’t be that person on board a flight that everyone secretly wants to push out the emergency exit.”
The post sparked a lively debate on Reddit, with some arguing airplane bathrooms are too cramped for diaper duty — while others insisted basic hygiene and consideration for fellow passengers shouldn’t be optional.
Fellow flyers wasted no time chiming in with their own horror stories — and hygiene hacks.
One grossed-out commenter griped: “I have seen so many parents change their babies diapers on the seat. It is SO GROSS. This is why I travel with Clorox wipes, lol.”
Another reader said the move wasn’t just nasty — it broke the rules: “This is a violation of just about every airline’s policies. I would have either told the parents to stop or immediately alerted a FA.”
Some insisted the bathrooms are cramped, but still doable.
One frequent flier recalled: “I flew with infants many times. It’s not easy, but when I had to change a diaper en route I went to the tiny bathroom, sat on the toilet, put a blanket on my lap, and changed my squirming infant. AND I ALSO carried ziplock bags so I could minimize any unpleasantness for the staff or other passengers.”
And this wasn’t exactly a one-off whiff. For some passengers on a similar flight, it’s more like, been there, smelled that.
Back in August 2024, The Post reported a similar in-flight stink on a Delta flight, when two parents were roasted on Reddit for changing their baby’s diaper right in their seats.
One horrified passenger recounted the scene: “The people in the row in front of me are changing a poopy diaper in their seats,” she wrote, laying out a truly putrid picture for fellow travelers.
“Anyone ever experienced this? The smell is horrendous.”
Her advice was blunt: “There’s no reason not to do this in the bathroom.”
Ultimately, in the battle of babies vs. fellow passengers, it seems the cabin air always loses.
