Melania Trump joined her husband, President Donald Trump, at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix amid ongoing scrutiny about his relationship with White House aide Natalie Harp.
Melania, 56, and Donald, 80, were both present at the Washington, D.C. racetrack on Sunday, August 23, as part of the United States’ official 250th anniversary celebrations. The outing marked the first lady’s first public appearance in 32 days.
“It’s incredible day, and I think everybody did [an] amazing job,” Melania gushed to Fox News on Sunday, remarking how local officials transformed D.C. streets into a Formula 1-caliber racetrack. “It is wonderful to have them here, very exciting [and] people looking forward to this incredible event.”
Melania’s rare appearance comes days after Harp, the president’s executive assistant, raised eyebrows for their oddly close working relationship.
“I want things to always be right between us,” Harp, 34, allegedly wrote to Donald in a 2023 letter recently obtained by The Daily Beast. “I also know I’ve been distracted all week (forgetting to eat throughout the days, and even forgetting to sleep, and only catching a couple hours at a time).”
“Natalie Harp is one of the most loyal and hardest-working aides on President Trump’s team,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said in a statement to The Daily Beast, defending the now-controversial aide. “The media should get back to reporting real news and stop regurgitating Trump-Deranged liberal talking points.”
Harp’s brother later criticized her allegedly “unhealthy obsession” with Donald. Neither Donald, Melania nor Harp have addressed the speculation. Us has reached out to the White House for comment.
During her rare public outing, Melania and her husband were able to meet the Grand Prix drivers before taking a seat in a car themselves on Sunday.
“It was exciting, of course,” she said, adding that she “loved every minute of” being on the course. “When I was growing up, my father introduced me to races and to race cars, and he owned some incredible cars — [including] a Maserati, Cougar, Mustang, Mercedes. He introduced me to the design of cars, and the mechanics, and also the speed.”
Elsewhere during the interview, Melania highlighted her new Fostering the Future initiative to support young individuals in the foster care system. (Fostering the Future was launched via an executive order signed by Donald in November 2025.
“Fostering the Future provides scholarships at the university level within [the] foster care community. And it’s very important, because we need to support them,” Melania told Fox of the program. “They need to have the same opportunities as other children, and I’m very proud to say that we had the first doctor graduating, and we now have 26 universities all around the country that have foster students. I encourage every governor in every state to sign and support foster children.”
