Meghan Markle has shared sweet new details about the early days of dating Prince Harry.
Taking to social media, the Duchess of Sussex shared an Instagram post on Friday, July 4 revealing why the date is such a special day for the couple.
“Our second date was the 4th of July 2016 and H brought me cupcakes to celebrate,” Meghan, 43, explained in the caption alongside a carousel of photos.
To mark the occasion, the Suits alum shared a rare candid photo of herself cozying up to Harry, 40, during the date. Also among the images were photos of cupcakes decorated in red, white and blue to suit the festivities.
“Now, all these years later, our two children are in on the tradition,” she added. Happy Independence Day! May your day be as sweet as these cupcakes 🧁”
The pair began dating in 2016 after being introduced by mutual friends and announced their engagement in 2017.
Meghan officially confirmed their romance via a cover story for Vanity Fair that was published in September 2017.
“We’re a couple. We’re in love,” she told the magazine. “I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
In May 2018, the fairytale continued as Meghan and Harry tied the knot in an elaborate royal wedding at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, England.
It wasn’t long before they started a family, with the couple welcoming their first child, son Archie in May 2019. Their daughter Lilibet, named after Queen Elizabeth II’s nickname, arrived in June 2021.
Meghan and Harry made waves in 2020 when they stepped away from their duties as working royals and opted to move out of the U.K. and do things on their own terms.
While part of the Royal Family, Meghan shut down her social media accounts but resurrected her Instagram in recent months and has been sharing snippets from her personal life with her family.
Appearing on the “Aspire With Emma Grede” podcast in June, Meghan spoke about how empowering it has been for her to return.
“It doesn’t feel like a drag, it feels liberating,” Meghan said on the podcast. “I have to look again, what was my intention? I came back, started the account in January of this year.”
Meghan added that her Instagram return allowed her to “get my voice back” and share content on her own terms.
“Part of it is just being able to authentically share in real time the things that are happening that I think someone might be able to laugh with or enjoy or be inspired by,” she explained.
