Marilyn Monroe’s classic Mercedes-Benz, which she drove around Europe in the 1950s, is set to fetch up to $21,5380 at auction.

The mint condition 1950 Mercedes-Benz 170 S (W136) was used by the American sex symbol when she stayed in Greece just six years before her death.

The current owner discovered the link to the Hollywood siren after finding fitted luggage bearing ‘MM’ insignia while restoring the car.

A bespoke golden plaque featuring her initials is also displayed on the polished walnut dashboard.

The car is expected to sell for between $16,1535 and $21,5380 but could fetch far more when it goes under the hammer at Iconic Auctioneers.

Car specialist Steve Keen said: “Opportunities like this are incredibly rare.

“This 170 S is not only restored to an exacting standard but also carries a well-documented and fascinating link to Marilyn Monroe.

“It represents the kind of significant motor car that appeals to collectors across the spectrum, from automotive enthusiasts to those interested in cultural history.”

Research indicates the car was used as Monroe’s personal transportation during a stay in Greece in 1956.

It was imported through the port of Piraeus in February that year, and the car is supported by period insurance documentation signed ‘Marilyn Monroe,’ covering February to August 1956.

This aligns with her time in Europe before she returned to the U.S., where she married playwright Arthur Miller in June of that year.

Monroe tragically passed away on August 4, 1962, at the age of 36.

The icon died from an overdose of the drug barbiturates at her home in Los Angeles, with the empty bottle of sleeping pills found by her bed.

There have been several conspiracy theories that her death was a murder, but it was officially ruled a drug overdose.

Following the discovery of the car, investigations through the Greek registration and insurance archives led to the discovery of the insurance certificate.

Documentation also confirms its classification at the time as a ‘Special Category Vehicle,’ typically reserved for high-profile VIPs.

The car – boasting a 1.7-litre engine and 52bhp power – fell into a state of disrepair before being restored by Brookfield Classic Cars.

The work included a complete dismantling and rebuild, with components sourced from original suppliers or remanufactured using factory drawings and period-correct methods.

The car will be auctioned at the Supercar Fest at Sywell Aerodrome, Northamptonshire, on May 16.
