The Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks will shoot off from both the East River and the Hudson — a rare spectacle as New York City gears up to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
The iconic, patriotic fireworks show by Macy’s — which is also marking its own half-century anniversary — is planned to illuminate the Brooklyn Bridge and delight spectators from both the Big Apple and Jersey City.
“We are proud to celebrate our 50th anniversary with a once in a generation experience filled with emotional storytelling and signature spectacle to connect millions of people nationwide,” said Sharon Otterman, chief marketing officer for Macy’s, in a statement.
The annual pyrotechnic extravaganza has alternated between the East and Hudson rivers over the years, but seldom is held in both waterways.
One exception was in 2000, when Macy’s held its fireworks show in both rivers following a massive ship gathering.
For this year, Macy’s originally tried to get permits from New York City for fireworks barges in the Hudson River, but city officials denied the company because of a conflict with the Sail250 ship gathering that morning, sources said.
The NYPD — which will be pulling 12-hour shifts to deal with July 4 crowds, America’s 250th anniversary, the World Cup and, perhaps, Taylor Swift’s wedding — didn’t have enough cops to spread out on both sides of Manhattan to provide security for the fireworks shows, the sources said.
The denial prompted Macy’s to request — and ultimately receive — a permit from New Jersey, where two fireworks barges will be anchored off Jersey City, according to sources.
Jersey City’s official viewing access points include the Colgate Clock and several areas along Hudson Street, except from Exchange Place, organizers said.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani held a now-closed lottery giving away 100,000 free tickets for prime East River viewing areas in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Manhattan’s Seaport.
Those ticketed areas cover Piers 1-6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Seaport Square.
Non-ticketed public viewing areas for the East River show will be open along the FDR Drive, but officials had yet to release details as of Tuesday afternoon.
