Lou Koller, the longtime frontman and co-founder of iconic New York hardcore band Sick of It All, has died after a battle with esophageal cancer. He was 59.
The Queens native’s death was announced Friday by his bandmates, who described Koller as a “beloved friend and an iconic frontman.”
“It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller. The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming,” the band wrote in a statement on Instagram.
“This year would have marked Sick of It All’s 40th anniversary as a band, and Lou’s camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm were always steadfast throughout the years.
“We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman. Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.”
Koller revealed in June 2024 that doctors had found a cancerous tumor in his esophagus extending into his stomach, forcing the band to cancel a European tour while he underwent treatment.
Fans and fellow musicians rallied around the singer, raising money for his medical expenses through a benefit concert at Irving Plaza in Manhattan later that year.
In May 2025, Koller said he had completed his final round of chemotherapy and had been declared cancer-free. Months later, he revealed the cancer had returned.
The band also thanked fans who supported Koller during his illness.
“At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou’s medical fund,” the statement said.
“You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years. His battle is over now and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.”
Koller, who was born and raised in Queens alongside his three brothers, including future bandmate Pete Koller, attended Francis Lewis High School before launching Sick of It All with his younger brother and drummer Armand Majidi in 1986.
The singer once credited growing up in the borough with shaping his outlook.
“That’s the way we were raised in our neighborhood in Queens. You didn’t go out looking for trouble,” he told Anti-Matter in 2024.
“I think it’s funny that, a lot of times, these people who write songs about growing up hard and all that — they make their lives hard.”
The band became one of the defining acts in New York hardcore, releasing its debut album “Blood, Sweat and No Tears” in 1989.
Sick of It All went on to release 12 studio albums, including 1994’s “Scratch the Surface” and 2018’s “Wake the Sleeping Dragon!” while building an international following through decades of touring.
In 2016, Sick of It All celebrated its 30th anniversary with a sold-out hometown show at Webster Hall before closing out the year with three intimate performances in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, where Koller said fans snapped up tickets in just 15 minutes.
“If we can’t sell this out in New York City, we gotta call it quits. Because this is our hometown,” he told the Rockpit at the time.
WWE superstar CM Punk was among those who mourned Koller’s death, crediting the band’s 1995 hit “Cloberin’ Time” as inspiration for his entrance motto.
“Love you Lou and SOIA,” Punk said. “Thank you for the soundtrack for my life. Sending hugs. Tonight’s “clobberin’ time” is for Lou.”
Koller also received admiration across the music landscape.
“All our love to the SOIA family and especially the Koller family,” the Dropkick Murphys posted. “Rest In Peace Lou we are so glad to have shared many great memories with you. Always a class act and gentleman. Gone but NEVER FORGOTTEN.”
“RIP to the legend,” Rancid rocker Lars Frederiksen said.
