More than 10,000 jobs could be on the chopping block if a proposed mega-merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. goes through — potentially dealing a major blow to Los Angeles’ entertainment economy.

The proposed deal between the two Hollywood giants could put 10,360 jobs and $4.06 billion in business output at risk, according to a new report from the Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity.

“If the merger goes through, about 4,500 film and TV jobs in Los Angeles County could be lost over the three-year period,” the report states.

Another 2,661 jobs at small businesses that support film and TV production could be affected, along with 3,204 additional jobs tied to spending by entertainment workers in the local economy.

The economic fallout could be just as staggering.

The county estimates the potential losses at $1.26 billion in wages, $2.78 billion in economic value and $4.06 billion in total business output.

The findings were released alongside the LA County Film Office and was the final 120-day assessment following a 60-day interim report submitted to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in June.

The Board approved the DEO to study the potential workforce damage back in March and ordered a 60-day interim and 120-day final assessment timeline.

The DEO is under the supervision of the County Board, which is led by four Democrats and one Republican.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta also filed a lawsuit with 11 other attorney generals to challenge the $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. by Paramount in July.

Bonta called the merger “unlawful” and said it would lead to “higher prices, lower quality, and less content for film and television, harming movie theaters, basic cable distributors, and ultimately, audiences on every sofa and movie theater seat in the U.S.”
