Social media is currently losing its mind over a surprisingly simple hack: taking a classic, store-bought Krispy Kreme Original Glazed doughnut and pan-frying it.
The result? A caramelized, ultra-crispy exterior with a warm, pillowy centre that’s currently going viral.
This food hack took off after a TikTok creator decided to try and make a crispy version of the brand’s iconic sweet treat in response to a meme featuring “Seinfeld”‘s Annie Korzen who famously went viral for asking “was it crispy” when asking someone if they’d “ever had a Krispy Kreme?”
And it turns out, @kellyycha’s kitchen experiment, which sees her throwing the doughnut into a into hot pan and watching the sugar glaze melt into a crème-brûlée-like crust, is actually pretty great.
Foodie Bayle, who constantly tries new food tricks and reviews different meals, told news.com.au he tried it because “it looked so interesting.”
And his conclusion?
“I would definitely eat a doughnut that had been fried again,” he shared.
“It was surprisingly delicious and had a crispy outer layer while still being soft in the middle.
“I actually really enjoyed it.”
He also shared some tips for those wanting to try it at home, stating you will need to keep a watchful eye on the stove.
This is because of the high sugar content in the glaze, meaning the line between perfectly caramelized and completely burnt is incredibly thin.
Bayle says it takes around three minutes for each side of the doughnut to cook.
“You do need to be careful, though — I may have burnt a few while figuring it out,” Bayle admitted.
For the best results, chefs must keep the heat at a medium to low setting.
Bayle thinks this trick could “definitely work” with other doughnut brands, if foodies were willing to try.
“The texture and flavour might vary slightly, but I imagine most glazed doughnuts would give a similar result,” Bayle said.
While some brands might shy away from fans altering their products, Krispy Kreme is leaning into the fun.
“We love seeing the creativity our fans bring to enjoying our doughnuts,” Chief Marketing Officer at Krispy Kreme ANZ, Aimee Cutajar, told news.com.au.
“While nothing beats a fresh, warm, melt-in-your-mouth Original Glazed doughnut straight off the line, we’re all about sharing joy — so it’s exciting to see a simple twist on our signature doughnut resonating with so many customers.”
Even Krispy Kreme TikTok accounts have chimed in.
“We might have to give this a try,” the global Krispy Kreme account commented with the eyes emoji.
“That is a Krispy Kreme 2.0,” the Krispy Kreme UK account added with the love heart eyes emoji.
People have lost their minds to this trick, flooding the TikTok comment section in awe.
“I need this,” one person wrote.
“Am I the only one who feels slightly dumb for not thinking of this?” another questioned.
“I feel this is how they were intended to be eaten,” a third added.
A lot of people even added their own suggestions, claiming that having the crispy dessert with ice cream would be the perfect touch.
