Boston Blue is already generating a lot of buzz before its CBS premiere this fall thanks, in part, to the spinoff series’ all-star cast — and one very popular member of the Reagan family.
Blue Bloods came to an end on CBS in an action-packed series finale in December 2024. The police procedural drama’s fans were quick to lobby for a spinoff, and they were happy when their wish came true just a few months later with the announcement of Boston Blue.

Is ‘Boston Blue’ About Danny Reagan?
Boston Blue will center around Danny Reagan as he navigates a new job at Boston PD. He’ll have some help from a new team along the way. Much like Blue Bloods, family will be at the core of Boston Blue, with a new law enforcement brood led by Ernie Hudson taking front and center.
Why Is Danny Reagan Moving to Boston After ‘Blue Bloods’?
As for what causes Danny to move from New York City and leave his post at the NYPD, star Donnie Wahlberg dropped some hints about the character’s future.
“Something might happen to move him away from New York. But he’s always going to be a Reagan,” Wahlberg said during a May 2025 interview with Fox News Digital.
Despite the NYPD detective moving away from his family in the spinoff, Wahlberg assured fans that family will remain at the center of the franchise.
“I stopped looking at this show, Boston Blue, as a … once I started to let go of Blue Bloods, I started to see the opportunity that Boston Blue was,” he said. “That it’s really a chance for us to carry on the tradition and the legacy of the show. And I know how important it is to the viewers because I share what Blue Bloods meant. It meant a lot to me as well. So I know there’s a lot of excitement and enthusiasm about it.”
It has not yet been made clear whether or not his transfer to Boston PD was mandatory or voluntary. Wahlberg hinted that viewers can likely expect to see Blue Bloods characters make cameos in Boston Blue, raising questions about whether or not we’ll see Danny travel back to NYC for family dinners at the Reagan household or if his family members will travel to Boston.
What Happened to Danny Reagan in the ‘Blue Bloods’ Series Finale?
The Blue Bloods series finale was a big turning point for Danny, who had a deep conversation with grandfather Henry Reagan about settling down.
“I always told you not to bring the job home,” Henry told Danny in the finale. “As far as I can see, you’ve done a good job with that. But the problem now is, you have no one not to bring it home to. I have no doubt that you’ll get these guys and go onto another case and another case. The problem is…”
“That I don’t have anyone not to bring it home to?” Danny chimed in.
“Promise me that when this case is over, you’ll find that someone,” Henry responded.
Throughout the last few seasons of the show, fans were hoping to see Danny begin a relationship with Maria Baez. In the series finale, despite Danny asking Baez out for pizza, she was not invited to the final Reagan family dinner.
Wahlberg said that Boston Blue will answer “unanswered questions” that fans may have had after the Blue Bloods series finale. There’s a big chance viewers will learn if Danny and Baez’s romance is still going strong or if the distance proved to be too much for them to navigate after his move to Boston.
