Ex-Va. Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and wife Cerina’s teen children were blessed from birth with sharp intellects and impressive athletic prowess, but for years suffered under the crushing weight of their parents’ toxic marriage and a father whose life and mental state were in freefall.
Court documents describe Cameron, 16 and his kid sister Carys, 14, as “hard-working” students who “perform to high academic standards” at top-notch private schools.
Both are also “gifted athletes” who play on school and travel teams – Cameron is the captain of Gonzaga College High School’s basketball team, while Carys is a stand-out athlete at St. Paul VI High School, where she plays varsity lacrosse.
Cerina, 49, had been the children’s primary caregiver their entire lives – their “port in the storm” as their parents’ marriage slowly fell apart, the documents state, noting their particularly “tight bond” with their dentist mother.
But while the teens were excelling in every aspect of their lives, a malevolent force was simmering inside their father as his political career and personal life hit the skids following multiple accusations of sexual assault.
His headlong descent into the abyss culminated in a vicious act of violence that left them orphans and inflicted upon Cameron the cruel trauma of finding his mother’s bullet-riddled body.
Justin Fairfax, 47, once a rising star in the Democratic Party who served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022, murdered his wife of nearly 20 years before turning the gun on himself Thursday in the couple’s $1 million Annandale home just outside Washington, DC.
The court found that the kids were “negatively impacted by their parents’ toxic living situation,” and voiced concern that they needed “stability, assurance, and parents who are holistically invested in their well-being” as they entered their rollercoaster teen years.
She was their “cook, disciplinarian and primary nurturer,” the court described their doting mom, adding that the children turned to her “almost exclusively” for their emotional needs.
As Justin spiraled deeper into alcoholism and “unaddressed emotional trauma,” his relationship with the children frayed – the court documents revealing he had a cursory relationship with Cameron but had “very strained” ties with Carys after a falling out in October 2025.
On the occasions he’d attend his son’s basketball games, he’d sit far away from the family and spend most of his time with his nose in his phone, the court documents state.
And Fairfax also blew money meant for the kids’ horseback-riding lessons on a gun for himself.
In March, a judge awarded Cerina primary custody of both children, and her estranged husband was restricted to seeing the children on Wednesdays and Saturdays only, and on the condition he consented to an alcohol test before and immediately after every visit.
Cerina was in the process of petitioning to have him held in contempt of court for refusing to pay $1,865 per month for household bills or contribute to the kids’ private schools, which ran $56,000 per year in total, and just last month, Justin was ordered to vacate the family home by the end of April.
Court documents reveal he was penniless at the time of the murder-suicide, carrying over $750,000 in debt when she filed for divorce last July.
The fallen-from-grace pol saw his career go up in flames when two women accused him of sexual assault in 2019. After he left office, he opened up his own private law firm, which failed to garner success.
