Money talks. Even if it is Z most touchy subject to broach between buds.
Still, the pushover Gen Zers who constantly pick up the check at group dinners, cover the tab after a round of happy hour drinks and loan loot to pals for concert tix and exotic trips are expending their generosity at a major cost.
Twenty-somethings nationwide are nosediving into debt, fronting the funds for friends and family members to enjoy social experiences, and going unreimbursed for fear of having an uncomfortable conversation concerning repayment, per new data.
It’s a rising phobia among the young, known as “payment avoidance” stress.
A gobsmacking “76% of Gen Z consumers who have fronted money for a group expense, like a trip or event, say they were not fully repaid,” revealed Zelle’s 2026 Avoidance Economy Report, with 55% admitting that the cash woes have “created tension or negatively affected a relationship.”
But worse than a little bad blood, the price of being nice has left 47% of Zoomers in the red, financially.
It’s the trouble of being charitable.
With the sky-high cost of living — let alone living it up at buzzy outings like Coachella, which demanded $1,437 for weekend passes this April, or the recent FIFA World Cup finals, with tickets that started at $7,857 — breadwinners under age 30 are losing dough faster than they can earn it.
While some don’t mind splurging beyond their means, so long as it means never having to miss out on the fun, others struggle to survive on strict budgets, forgoing major festivities just to keep roofs over their heads.
Then, of course, there are the easily-manipulated, non-confrontational Z’s who simply can’t say “No” to folks hoping for a handout, nor can they muster up the courage to ask for their moolah back.
Researchers for Zelle describe “payment avoidance” as a prominent social behavior which prompts people to delay, ignore or withdraw from difficult money conversations with loved ones.
The experts determined that 48% of Gen Z consumers view delaying repayment as avoidance, with 33% agreeing that discussing funds owed between friends causes stress and anxiety.
A staggering 19% of Millennials and 14% of Gen Z also confessed to ending a friendship or relationship over repayment disputes.
“Delaying repayment can create a bigger problem than the debt itself,” Traci Williams, board-certified clinical psychologist and certified financial therapist, explained in the report.
“What starts as a payment request can quickly turn into avoidance to temporarily reduce financial anxiety,” she added. “Taking responsibility, acknowledging the delay and using simple tools to pay people back can help reduce stress and protect relationships.”
To avoid the fracas, investigators found that digital repayment tools, like Zelle, aided 80% of Gen Zs in being reimbursed, with 50% lauding the tool for limiting the “awkwardness” of having a one-on-one chat.
“Whether it’s a group trip, a birthday dinner or tickets to a major event, Zelle helps people pay each other back quickly through their banking app,” Denise Leonhard, the company’s general manager, said in a statement.
“That speed and simplicity can make a meaningful difference when money is on the line between friends and family.”
