Former collegiate swimmer Legend Storer has been charged with murder after he allegedly beat a 63-year-old security guard to death while he was naked.

Storer, 20, pleaded not guilty on Friday, August 7, after he was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and indecent exposure. He is currently in custody.

The Maui Police Department said that the incident took place around 3 a.m. on August 5. At the time, a police dispatcher received a report that a naked man was wandering through a Kahana neighborhood, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Officers then set out to find Storer, who was located and found with several abrasions. Storer was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was evaluated.

Two hours after Storer was found, Maui police officers received a report about an unresponsive male at a condominium resort called Sands of Kahana. Paramedics later told police that a 63-year-old Lahaina man had died from injuries he sustained at the condominium resort. The victim was reportedly beat up with a five-gallon water bottle.

The victim was later identified as security guard Michael Dyer, who was working an overnight shift at the condominium at the time of the incident.

After police reviewed surveillance security footage, they said that a naked man wandered into Dyer’s office around 1:45 a.m. and assaulted him before he fled the scene on foot.

“Investigators subsequently determined that the male located in Kahana was the same individual depicted in the surveillance footage,” police said in a statement obtained by the outlet.

Once Storer was released from the hospital, he was taken to Wailuku Police Station and was booked into jail for his alleged involvement in Dyer’s murder.

Prior to his arrest, Storer was a competitive swimmer and a two-time champion in Hawaii’s Maui Interscholastic League. He later competed on the swim team at Concordia University in Irvine.

A spokesperson for Concordia University confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that Storer was a student during the 2024-25 academic year, as well as a member of the men’s swim team. However, he did not return to the university for the following year.

An attorney for Storer did not immediately respond to Us’ request for comment about the case.

Following the attack, Dyer’s loved ones set up GoFundMe to help his wife, Joy Dyer, pay for his funeral.

“Thankfully, Mike’s killer is in police custody, but Joy’s emotional journey is just beginning as she starts to process this devasting event. They were married for 26 years,” the page read.

In addition to having a goal of $20,000 “to cover funeral costs for Mike,” the loved ones were also “trying to help Joy with therapy sessions and basic living expenses like rent and groceries. Every dollar will go towards Joy’s recovery as she begins her road to healing.”
