While some maniacs love sitting in the middle seat on airplanes, others will do anything to avoid it, but usually it’ll cost them.
Thankfully, content creator Jordan King, also known online as the “Coupon King” on social media, shared a hack where Ryanair flyers can completely avoid the squished seat and instead choose a window or aisle seat for free.
In a recent Instagram video, King advised his almost 400,000 followers to open a plane’s seat selection menu as if they were about to book a flight, and “find all the seats you don’t want to sit in.”
Then, in a new browser tab, he said to create a new booking for that same flight with a “bogus” name and select all the middle seats under that name.
“These seats are then frozen for a few minutes while they’re in someone else’s basket,” he explained.
Keep in mind, you might have to add several phony names if there are a lot of available middle seats.
From there, King said to go back to the original booking and select “random seat allocation.”
Since those dreaded middle seats appear to the airline as if another passenger is currently booking them (under those fake names), the airline supposedly can’t seat you in them and you’ll hopefully be placed in one of those remaining window or aisle seats.
Plenty of thankful flyers ran to the comment section to share their appreciation for the helpful tip.
“That’s so clever!!” one wrote.
“Middle seats are the worst omg this is gold,” another wrote.
“Also only works if the flight is not full. Generally not possible during peak times. But for quieter flights I’ve done this a few times and [it] does work,” someone pointed out.
“Stop advertising this! It works but soon everyone will be doing it!” one commenter already in on the hack jokingly wrote.
In today’s wildly expensive economy, the more plane hacks to save a dollar — the better.
If you’re headed to the airport sometime soon and are hoping for a seat upgrade, a veteran flight attendant shared some helpful things to know if you’re looking to finesse your way to first class.
“Check in as soon as online check-in opens, not just on the day of travel,” Barbara Bacilieri told creatorzine.com. “On many airlines, if two passengers have the same priority, the one who checked in first may receive the upgrade.”
She also pointed out that flyers who are traveling alone might have better luck hitting the upgrade jackpot, “because moving one passenger is much easier than moving a family.”
Bacilieri also pointed out that being well-dressed for a flight can sometimes work in one’s favor.
“While smart clothing doesn’t move you up the list, very casual clothing can sometimes work against you. A suit isn’t necessary but looking neat and presentable can prevent you from being overlooked,” she explained.
