Florida man uses his body as shield against hailstorm in wild video: ‘Yes, it hurt’

A Florida man threw himself onto his own car in a desperate bid to fend off a punishing hailstorm — and the wild moment, caught on video, has since exploded online.

Manny Rosado, a resident of Palm Bay, was filmed scrambling onto the roof of his vehicle as heavy hail pelted down, using his body to hold a makeshift cover in place over his sunroof.

The chaotic clip, which quickly went viral on TikTok, shows Rosado sprawled across the car, legs kicking and arms bracing as chunks of ice slam into him and the vehicle.

What looks like slapstick at first glance was anything but.

“Yes, it hurt,” Rosado said in a TikTok post, confirming the obvious physical toll of the barrage.

Rosado later explained that he had rushed outside as the storm intensified, trying to prevent costly damage to his car before it was too late.

“Hail was coming down as I was putting a tent over my sunroof in an attempt to protect it from breaking,” he told Storyful, describing the frantic moments leading up to the now-viral footage.

“I was caught on top of the car stuck while getting hit by the hail,” he added.

The video captures that exact moment — Rosado pinned in place, gripping the cover while ice pounds down around him, his body effectively acting as a human shield.

Despite the absurd visuals, Rosado made clear there was a serious financial motivation behind the stunt.

In the comment section of the clip, he addressed viewers questioning why he didn’t simply let the storm take its course.

“Before y’all ask why I ain’t let it happen, the hail can get bad and grow big, so I ain’t trying to see my insurance hurt,” he wrote.

He pointed to past storms in the area as proof that the threat was real — and expensive.

“Two years ago, it was so bad most of the people I knew had serious damage costing damn near $3,000-$5,000. I’d rather go down trying,” he said.

The footage has since racked up massive engagement online, with viewers split between laughing at the over-the-top scene and sympathizing with the lengths Rosado went to protect his property.

For Rosado, the split-second decision to climb onto his car may have looked ridiculous — but it was rooted in experience and a desire to avoid a hefty repair bill.

Whether the gamble ultimately saved his sunroof remains unclear.

And while many viewers see humor in the spectacle, Rosado’s own words make clear the stakes were anything but funny.

“I’d rather go down trying.”
