Rail operator Golden Eagle Luxury Trains has unveiled an updated version of one of its signature European journeys, the “Balkan Explorer”.
The 12-day itinerary aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express links Venice with Istanbul, travelling through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Bulgaria and Türkiye.
The refreshed route reflects a growing appetite for exploring beyond Europe’s classic capitals, combining iconic cities with lesser-known cultural and natural attractions. The journey begins with two nights in Venice before the private train departs eastwards via Trieste and into Slovenia.
Among the new highlights is an exclusive after-hours visit to the spectacular Postojna Cave system in Slovenia, allowing guests to explore one of Europe’s largest karst cave networks away from the daytime crowds.
From there, the train continues along Croatia’s Adriatic coast with new stops in the historic cities of Pula and Rijeka before heading inland to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The revised itinerary devotes additional time to both Sarajevo and Mostar, enabling travellers to delve deeper into the region’s complex history, Ottoman heritage and dramatic mountain scenery.
An overnight hotel stay has also been added in Belgrade, giving guests more time to experience the Serbian capital before continuing through Sofia and Plovdiv en route to Istanbul.
Throughout the journey, passengers travel aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express, where en-suite cabins, restaurant cars serving regional cuisine and bar lounge car echo the style of Europe’s classic luxury rail travel.
Off-train excursions are included throughout the itinerary, ranging from guided city tours and cultural performances to exclusive visits to historic landmarks outside regular opening hours.
The Balkan Explorer operates on selected departures throughout the year. Upcoming departures include 2 October 2026, followed by 7 May, 10 September and 19 October 2027. Prices start from €21,100 for a twin room in Deluxe Class for the October 2026 departure, rising to €23,600 for 2027 departures, with Superior Deluxe Class accommodation also available.
The fare includes two hotel nights in Venice, an overnight stay in Belgrade, a hotel stay in Istanbul, seven nights aboard the train, all meals, drinks while on board, excursions, transfers and gratuities.
The Balkan Explorer is one of several luxury European rail tours operated on the Golden Eagle Danube Express.
Other routes include the eight-day Paris to Istanbul journey, crossing several European countries including Austria, Slovenia, Serbia and Bulgaria before arriving in Türkiye, as well as the 11-day Grand Alpine Express linking Budapest and Venice through Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and northern Italy.
