Ralph Lauren’s spring fashion show was a study in strength and softness.
“I loved the mix of masculine and feminine,” actor Rachel Brosnahan told Alexa after the runway presentation at Tribeca’s Jack Shainman Gallery. “I feel like Ralph has always been so talented at that, but in this collection in particular there was beautiful corset lacing down the back of jackets,” continued the “Presumed Innocent” star.
“I felt very moved by this collection,” added Eiza González, who just finished filming the female bodybuilding drama, “Iron Jane.” “He always knows how to design to make a woman look even more beautiful. It’s not about distracting or taking away, but it’s about adding to you and feeling gorgeous in your own actual state.”
The boldfaced pair were joined in the front row by more than a dozen A-listers. Ralph-clad Viola Davis sat next to her husband, Julius Tennon, near Cynthia Erivo, Elizabeth Debicki, Ariana DeBose, Meghann Fahy, Ella Hunt, Amélie Hoeferle and Laetitia Casta, among others.
The elegant event kicked off New York Fashion Week, which officially starts on Thursday. The bi-annual celebration of style runs through September 15 and features more than 70 shows, presentations and glittering parties held in venues across the city.
In a nod to his menswear origins, Ralph sent out tailored suits, plenty of pants and even a wide necktie (or two), the item that launched his storied career nearly 60 years ago. Crisp navy slacks were topped with, say, an immaculate white blouse. The look was bossed up.
For evening, silhouettes were fluid and ultrafeminine. There were sinuous gowns galore, including a long, twinkling navy tank covered in micro-sequins worn over trousers and wrap dresses engineered with a single seam. Swishy, full-skirted skirts supplied volume.
When models swagged down the runway in by turns polished and poetic looks, it was clear that Ralph had captured the best of both worlds.
