It was the opposite of a dumb idea.
A Texas couple went viral for showing up to prom in outfits inspired by the iconic scene from the movie “Dumb and Dumber” — where Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels’ characters attend a charity ball in matching orange and blue suits.
Brennon Allen of Atlanta was brainstorming ideas for out-of-the-ordinary prom ensembles with his girlfriend, Olivia King, when he came across a clip from the 1994 hit comedy.
“I was talking to my girlfriend and was like, ‘You know, it’s our senior prom. I want to make it memorable.’ Then a clip from the movie popped up on Instagram and I was like, ‘That would be such a good color scheme to pick from,’” he told The Post.
“I asked her about it and she was on board with it. And honestly, I think her mom was more on board with it than we were.”
“All of us moms that were teenagers in the ’90s were like, ‘Yes,’” said Brennon’s mother, Brooke, who posted the now-viral clip of the creative couple, which racked up more than 2.3 million combined views on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.
Brennon, a senior at Trinity Christian School, arrived at his prom on April 18 sporting a bright orange suit, with King, who attends Atlanta High School, donning a pale blue dress.
The couple accessorized with matching top hats — and even the canes Carrey and Daniels’ characters, Lloyd and Harry, use in the film to have a sparring match before entering the highbrow event.
Only a handful knew beforehand what the duo was wearing to the prom — which was held at The Collins Home, a historic event space in Texarkana — so most of Brennon’s classmates reveled in the surprise.
“When we walked in, we had the top hats and the canes, everybody was wanting to wear them and get the canes and fight with them. Everybody was so excited about it,” Brennon recalled.
Although the blockbuster — which made more than $246 million at the box office — was released 14 years before Brennon was even born, he estimates he’s seen it at least seven times.
“We’re those parents that we’re like, ‘You’re going to watch all the classics,’” Brooke said.
“She had to make sure I was raised right,” Brennon added.
Brooke had taken before-and-after prom photos of the teens, who have been dating for more than a year, never thinking it would go so viral.
“I just told them, kind of on a whim, I was like, ‘Y’all hold hands and jump.’ And then, when I got to prom, I was like, ‘OK, do it again.’ And I didn’t know what I was gonna do with it,” Brooke said.
“So I made the little video, posted it, didn’t think a thing about it. And then I just started getting all the notifications.”
The mother-son duo said they’ve been enjoying reading all the comments — which have been so overwhelmingly positive that Brooke made a follow-up video saying how pleasantly surprised she was by all the love.
“I was so thrilled that everybody loved it so much,” she said.
Brennon said his favorite comment was a take on a popular quote from the movie — when Lloyd trades a van for a bike and Harry says, “Just when I think you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this … and totally redeem yourself!”
“People commented, ‘Just when I think, this generation couldn’t possibly be any dumber, they go and do something like this … aaaaand TOTALLY REDEEM THEMSELVES!!!’” he said, laughing.
Others said the pair should have won the titles of Prom King and Queen.
“How my school does it is you can’t win Homecoming King and Prom King, and I had already won Homecoming King. So I couldn’t be in the running for Prom King,” Brennon explained.
“Or he totally would have,” Brooke added.
