A drone flying overhead at last night’s Longchamp bash in Soho toted the new limited-edition “Greetings from New York” Le Pliage travel bag to its designer, Jeremy Scott.
The tastemaker celebrated his 20-year collaboration with the French luxury brand at the buzzy party, which featured a DJ set by The Misshapes. He welcomed Longchamp-clad celeb guests including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Zoey Deutch, Kate Mara, Emma Roberts, Lourdes Leon, Coco Rocha, Ashley Benson, Joan Smalls, Anna Cathcart, Dascha Polanco and Nikki Rodriguez to the maison’s vast Prince St. flagship.
Scott’s latest tote is a love note to Manhattan. Inspired by vintage postcards, the $385 canvas bag with Russian leather handles is emblazoned with the city’s skyline. On the back it says, “Wish you were here! Love, Jeremy.” The correspondence theme played out on the third floor terrace, where guests were invited to fill out Scott-designed postcards displayed on racks and drop them in mint-colored mailboxes.
The launch marks his third postcard model, after the “Greetings from Paradise” edition in 2012 and, two years later, “Greetings from Paris.” The latter was created for the opening of the house’s Champs-Elysées boutique and is featured in the Comité Colbert’s new exhibit, “Hidden Treasures: 250 of Franco-American Luxury Stories” at The Shed through May 31.
When Scott was asked to design a tribute to New York, he immediately knew what he wanted to do. “This bag was a no-brainer to me,” Scott told Alexa. “We have to do the postcard, do an homage to New York, and continue this story.”
His home is in the Hollywood Hills, but Scott appreciates Big Apple energy.
“I love walking [in New York],” observed the creative, who lived in NYC when he was a fashion student at Pratt Institute before moving to Paris. “You don’t walk on the streets in L.A. and famously, there’s even a song about it,” he added, seemingly referring to the 1982 song “Walking in L.A.” by Missing Persons. “I love that connection with people that’s the most dynamic thing about New York.”
“I think I own at least six of Jeremy’s designs for Longchamp at this point, and carrying one through an airport or busy city street feels less like carrying a bag and more like carrying a piece of art,” said model Coca Rocha. “This latest vintage New York postcard design immediately pulled me in. I’ve called New York home for the last 20 years, and it completely shaped me. The design feels nostalgic, graphic, and playful, with that perfect mix of old New York grit and glamour.”
Fans of his pop-culture take on luxury can view the retrospective of his work, on display at the store through July 5. The façade of the building is festooned with the print of his first “Telephone” bag on a vivid turquoise background.
