Former President Barack Obama claimed Sunday “details about the motives” of accused White House Correspondents Dinner shooter Cole Allen were still unknown despite the gunman confessing he was targeting top Trump officials in a raving manifesto.
“Although we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, it’s incumbent upon all us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy,” Obama wrote on X Sunday afternoon.
“It’s also a sobering reminder of the courage and sacrifice that U.S. Secret Service Agents show every day. I’m grateful to them – and thankful that the agent who was shot is going to be okay.”
Politicians and online commentators quickly pounced on the Democrat’s claim of ignorance, pointing to Allen’s anti-Trump manifesto.
“There is no ambiguity. It was a politically motivated attack driven by anti-Trump and anti-Christian bile. It’s wrong to downplay or obscure the obvious motive,” argued former spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin.
EPA administrator Lee Zeldin also slammed the 44th president, writing on X “Let’s not pretend to be this clueless about motive.”
“The attempted assassin put out an anti-Trump manifesto about wanting to kill Trump Admin officials, minutes before trying to storm a ballroom filled with the President, VP, Cabinet, and many others from his Admin,” the former Long Island congressman wrote.
“It was politically motivated,” Utah Sen. Mike Lee added. “He made that pretty clear.”
An account belonging to the Republican National Committee also ripped into Obama.
“Law enforcement officers confirmed this radicalized Leftist was targeting President Trump and his administration last night,” RNC Research wrote. “Why are you lying.”
A rambling manifesto that law enforcement said was written by Cole, a 31-year-old California educator, allegedly details his desire to kill Trump administration officials “from highest to lowest.”
“I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes,” Allen wildly wrote, apparently referring to the president.
The missive also dives into controversial actions taken by the White House – like Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration – and referenced his Christian faith numerous times.
Allen opened fire inside the Washington Hilton as he tried to race past authorities and into the ballroom where President Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other cabinet officials were hobnobbing with journalists during the annual DC dinner Saturday night.
Law enforcement officers subdued him in a violent showdown, and he’s expected to be arraigned Monday on two counts of wielding a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon.
