Forget rooftop pools and pillow menus, some of Europe’s coolest hotels are now competing on sound.

From vinyl-only listening bars in Athens to audiophile cocktail lounges in London, a new wave of design-led hotels is turning music into the main event, transforming lobbies, restaurants and basements into immersive spaces built around analogue sound, curated DJs and intentional listening.

Across the continent, a new generation of hotels are focused on providing more than just a place to stay, integrating music-led programming into their offerings, inspired by an increasing number of travellers enjoying musical experiences across their trips, including in the dining and nightlife spaces.

Leading the way is Okupa, an urban hub in Athens, which combines hotel stays, shared work spaces, a restaurant, and a cafe.

Since it opened in 2024, Okupa has been focused on bringing music to its guests.

At its centre, you’ll find its Kitchen and Listening Bar, where you can expect weekly live performances, DJ evenings and Sunday jazz sessions, all held by a mix of locals, vinyl connoisseurs and international musicians.

Okupa has been approaching sound as an extension of hospitality itself since its opening, and integrates curated music programming with Levantine-inspired dining and cocktails alongside a wider cultural programme which spans exhibitions, workshops and movement classes.

It’s not just Athens where hotels are offering music-led experiences. Here is a selection of the best places to try the concept for yourself.

Darsena Listening Suite at Il Sereno Lago Di Como, Italy

Il Sereno Lago Di Como in Italy is home to the world’s first hotel suite created entirely around the art of listening.

Described by the ultra-luxury property as a “sanctuary for sound”, the 200 m² lakefront space blends “iconic hi-fi audio with refined Italian design”. Highlights include horn speakers, tube amplification, a turntable, and a vintage reel-to-reel deck, plus a curated vinyl library of more than 500 records.

The suite also has master bedroom, two bathrooms, a dining room, a wet bar, a multimedia lounge, a walk-in wardrobe, and a fully-furnished lakeside terrace.

Virgin Hotels, London, UK

The Shoreditch-based hub is home to Hidden Grooves, a listening space inspired by 1970s audiophile culture. Here, you’ll find vintage Tannoy speakers, dedicated listening stations, and record-lined interiors, which all blend together to create a nostalgic atmosphere.

The Virgin hotel space boasts luxurious, retro interiors and is designed as both a social destination and immersive sound experience. It hosts vinyl-led sessions and offers cocktails inspired by iconic albums, attracting a stylish crowd of music lovers, creatives and East London locals late into the evening.

The atmosphere leans more intimate listening lounge than traditional hotel bar, with carefully curated DJ sets, warm lighting and analogue sound helping guests slow down and settle into the music.

Volkshotel, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Hidden beneath the cult-favourite Volkshotel, Doka has earned a reputation as one of Amsterdam’s coolest listening spaces. The intimate basement venue is centred around vinyl culture, with audiophile-grade sound systems, low lighting and carefully curated DJ sets creating a moody underground atmosphere.

The hotel attracts a creative crowd drawn to its late-night music programming, natural wines and stripped-back industrial interiors. Doka has become a go-to spot for locals and travellers looking to discover new music in a relaxed, immersive setting.

Casa Bonay, Barcelona, Spain

Casa Bonay, and its in-house bar Nica, has become one of Barcelona’s most stylish creative hubs, where music, design and hospitality blend effortlessly together. Across its rooftop, bars and communal spaces, the hotel regularly hosts vinyl sessions, DJ-led evenings and collaborations with local artists and creatives.

The hotel’s laid-back Mediterranean feel, design-forward interiors and strong connection to Barcelona’s cultural scene give it the atmosphere of a social club as much as a place to stay.

Guests can drift from coffee to cocktails to late-night music sessions, all soundtracked by carefully curated playlists and live selectors.
