Catching some Zs in economy class isn’t easy, and we’ve splashed plenty of cash on everything from eye masks to neck pillows in a bid to sleep better.

But for passengers flying with Emirates, there’s no need to buy anything to help in your quest for sleep because the airline has just unveiled a “game-changing” new headrest.

The U-Dream headrest, which is being rolled out across all of Emirates’ Airbus A350 aircraft and most of its Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s, features flexible side wings that mean you can sleep without your head falling forwards or sideways.

The UAE flag carrier is the first airline globally to introduce the headrest.

“Emirates never rests on its laurels when it comes to customer experience and we have found a way to significantly improve the comfort for Economy Class passengers, especially those travelling long-haul,” Sir Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airline, said.

“The U-Dream changes the game if the person wants to sleep – by supporting the neck in full. No more neck pillows needed. It’s another innovation that shows our commitment to customers and cements our Economy Class as the best.”

So far, three A350 aircraft have the headrest, and the entire fleet of A350 aircraft will have it by the end of the year.

From 2027, the headrest will also be installed on Emirates’ retrofitted A380s and 777s.

Economy class innovations

Earlier this week, US airline United announced it would be offering Economy Plus rows with no middle seat, giving customers extra elbow room and a shared table.

It comes after the airline unveiled its “relax rows”, a row of seats that convert into a bed.

Air New Zealand has just launched bunk beds on ultra long-haul flights that you can book for a four-hour window.
