Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the crushing “economic D-Day” sanctions being unleashed against Iran on Monday will be “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary.”

The imminent announcement of the impending financial penalties follows Bessent’s comments on CNBC Friday that the US would “collapse the regime” with the “toughest sanctions in history” as President Trump warned any nation providing “any type of lifeline” to Iran would face their own economic consequences.

“President Trump has dismantled Iran’s military capabilities, destroyed nearly 100 percent of its military factories and buried its nuclear program,” Bessent wrote Sunday night on X.

“We are now entering the endgame. As dawn begins an economic D-Day – the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary,” he continued.

Tehran last week pledged “crushing, punishing and devastating” consequences should the US move ahead with its planned crippling sanctions.

But Bessent seemingly batted down the threat in his Sunday social media post.

“The Islamic Republic has subsisted by dressing extortion as security guarantees. It has drawn strength from a calculus that regards Iranian retaliation as certain and American enforcement as negotiable,” he wrote

“Under President Trump, that era is over. And those who fear the danger of defying Tehran ought not to discount the cost of testing Washington.”
