A missing California DoorDash driver was found dead inside the trunk of a Tesla abandoned on the side of a highway as investigators begin investigating the chilling case as a homicide.
Javier Becerril, 42, of Hollister, was positively identified Tuesday after his body was discovered last Thursday inside the Tesla off Highway 152 near the San Luis Reservoir, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Becerril had been reported missing by his family before the grim discovery.
CHP investigators said suspicious circumstances surrounding the case led detectives to classify the death as a homicide.
“There are circumstances that are suspicious, and that’s why we’re treating it as such,” a CHP investigator said.
Detectives are now analyzing the Tesla’s onboard computer system to determine whether it contains data or video that could help identify the person or people responsible for Becerril’s death.
Back in Hollister, fellow DoorDash drivers have set up a small memorial for Becerril in the parking lot of a Safeway where they said he regularly picked up deliveries.
Authorities said Becerril’s family is fully cooperating with the investigation as they continue searching for answers.
A GoFundMe organized by the family remembered Becerril as “a father, devoted son, caring brother, and cherished cousin.”
“Javier had a kind heart, a generous spirit, and was always willing to help those he loved. His smile, laughter, and the memories he created with family and friends will never be forgotten,” the fundraiser states.
“During this incredibly difficult time, we are raising funds to help cover funeral and memorial expenses and to support his children as our family navigates this unimaginable loss. Any donation, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference. If you are unable to donate, we ask that you please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers and share this fundraiser with others.”
