Life often imitates art — and if recent photos from the set of The Devil Wears Prada 2 are any indication, sometimes the opposite is true as well.

Based on Friday, August 1, snaps showing stars Stanley Tucci and Meryl Streep decked out in their finest, many fans are assuming the long-awaited sequel may very well feature a Met Gala-esque event.

In one photo, Tucci, 64, dons a black tuxedo highlighted by black and white scarf draped over his shoulders. Streep, 76, hangs on to his arm while wearing a red long-sleeved gown — both outfits very reminiscent of the ensembles worn of fashion’s biggest night.

The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The first gala was held in 1948, and Vogue’s former editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland introduced the idea of theming the event in the 1970s.

Anna Wintour took over the event in 1995 and transformed it in terms of scale and guest list — the Met Gala soon attracted celebrities from the film, sports and music industries and is considered one of if not the most exclusive events in the world.

Though it’s never been officially confirmed, many consider the 2006 original film The Devil Wears Prada to be loosely based on Wintour — more specifically, that Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, serves as a parallel toVogue’s longtime editor-in-chief (who assumed a new role at Condé Nast earlier this year).

While attending the musical version of the film in London in December 2024, Wintour told the BBC that it is “for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly.”

Wintour also admitted she is not very concerned about feeling as though she has to “perform” as herself in public. “I don’t really think about it,” she explained. “What I’m really interested in is the creative aspect of my job.”

Production on the sequel to the original Devil Wears Prada film began in May 2025. The movie has largely reunited the original cast; Streep and Tucci are joined by Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Tracie Thomas and Tibor Feldman. It is unclear if Rich Sommer, Simon Baker and Daniel Sunjata will reprise their roles. Adrien Grenier, who played the somewhat controversial boyfriend of Hathaway’s character, Andy, will not return.

Patrick Brammell also joins the cast as a love interest for Hathaway’s character. Additional newcomers include Rachel Bloom, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Simone Ashley and Pauline Chalamet.

The movie “follows Priestly as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and as she faces off against Blunt’s character, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs,” Variety reported in May 2025.
