A Long Island man who stabbed his estranged wife to death in a botched murder-suicide unleashed the attack as their teen daughter tried valiantly to protect her, cops revealed Monday.
Marcos Aurelio Marques-Leal, 57, was indicted Monday in the ruthless Feb. 12 murder of Adriana Barbosa, prosecutors said — as they revealed the couple’s 16-year-old daughter tried to protect her mom as her dad stabbed her in the head and neck.
Marques-Leal, a Brazilian immigrant living in the country legally, had used a planter to smash into his estranged wife’s Farmingdale home then attacked her, slicing his hands of the teen as she tried to stop him, Suffolk County District Attorney Tierney said.
The deranged man then stabbed himself in the throat and stomach — but he survived, cops said.
“The charges in this indictment reflect a horrifying act of domestic violence that claimed the life
of an innocent woman and forever changed the life of a child who witnessed it,” Tierney said.
“No family should endure such terror, and no child should carry the trauma of seeing a parent killed before their eyes. We will pursue justice with unwavering determination, while keeping the victims at the center of this case.”
Marques-Leal broke an order of protection when he showed up to Barbosa’s home on the ill-fated night, officials said.
He tried to force his way into multiple entrances before breaking the glass doors and stalking the terrified victim and daughter into the bedroom where they had locked the door and called 911, according to authorities.
The alleged killer attempted to stab around his daughter but still left her hands cut up, authorities said.
All three were rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where Barbosa was pronounced dead shortly after arrival while Marques-Leal survived and his daughter was treated for minor injuries.
Marques-Leal has since been charged with murder, burglary, endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated criminal contempt.
He is due back in court March 25, and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
