Cheryl Hines is ready to set the record straight about her marriage to current U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
“I don’t think there’s any point to going through every rumor and headline to try to defend or explain it,” Hines, 59, told the Wall Street Journal in an interview published Monday, August 11. “Bobby and I talk about everything, so that’s how we move through everything, and we’re really good friends, and we trust each other.”
The actress also added that her upcoming memoir, titled Unscripted, will paint her marriage with Kennedy, 71, in a positive light.
“One would deduce that we love each other and are still married and whatever we’ve been through is behind us,” she told the publication.
In September 2024, Hines’ marriage was put under the microscope when reports surfaced that Kennedy allegedly engaged in a sexting affair with New York magazine political reporter Olivia Nuzzi during his 2024 presidential election campaign.
New York magazine published a public apology to its readers at the time, revealing that Nuzzi failed to disclose a “personal relationship” with an unnamed subject she profiled during her 2024 election coverage for the publication.
Neither New York magazine nor Nuzzi publicly named Kennedy, but multiple other outlets — including CNN and The New York Times — reported that the subject in question was Kennedy.
“The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict,” Nuzzi later said in a statement to The New York Times. “I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York.”
A rep for Kennedy also told NBC News, “Mr. Kennedy only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece.”
In the WSJ interview, Hines and Kennedy refused to comment on the scandal directly. But when asked about his wife getting pulled into controversy as a result of his political ambitions, Kennedy said it’s hard to control.
“There is no end, and if you get caught into responding to it, then it drags you into low vibrations,” he explained, “and the trick is to try to stay in the high vibrations.”
Hines and Kennedy have been married since 2014 after going through their own individual, previous divorces.
Last fall, the Curb Your Enthusiasm actress shared a glimpse into what makes her relationship with the controversial Secretary of Health — who promotes vaccination conspiracy theories and at one point falsely claimed that HIV does not cause AIDS — work.
“There has to be a connection,” Hines exclusively told Us in October 2024. “There’s, like, a connection that you look at your husband or your partner and all the crazy going on around you, or you look and you check in and it’s like, ‘OK. It’s going to be OK. We’re going to move through this moment.’ And, you know, a lot of times it’s funny and you can lean over and say, ‘This is crazy balls,’ and have a moment together and then hold your head up high and go to the next thing.”
