Chelsea Handler has an important message to share with men about various birth control methods.
“As a woman with natural breasts, not that that has anything to do with this, it is time to explore vasectomies,” the comedian, 51, said in a Friday, February 27, Instagram video while lying in a bed topless and giving herself a mammogram. “Since the beginning of time, women have been ducking and diving and dodging pregnancy face-first or Pikachu-first. Frankly, they’re exhausted.”
Handler shared that women, including herself, have grown tired of hearing men say that “using a condom doesn’t feel so good” or asking their sexual partners to “take birth control.”
“Enough, you horny little pigs in blankets,” Handler deadpanned before explaining the uncomfortable process of getting an Intrauterine Device (IUD) done. “Do you know how painful it is to get an IUD placed? It feels like a mouse trap in your uterus, and sometimes those things don’t even catch all the mice.”
An IUD is a form of birth control that a healthcare provider inserts into a person’s uterus, per the Cleveland Clinic. The procedure is typically done without any anesthesia or pain relief. An IUD can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years or more. It can also be removed by a physician if a woman decides she wants to try to become pregnant.
As for the birth control pill option that many women use, Handler shared that the medication can lead to various side effects.
“You think I want to be an adult woman with acne or have mood swings, or get a period that’s so heavy it feels like the Hoover Dam just broke? I don’t,” she quipped. “Everybody already hates women enough. I don’t need my insides to join in on the fun.”
Handler argued that it was time for men to take action when it comes to birth control and to stop leaving it up to their partners to figure out. She also advocated for men opting for vasectomies. (A vasectomy is a type of birth control that prevents the penis from releasing semen during sex, per the Mayo Clinic. The procedure involves a minor surgery, where a doctor cuts and seals the tubes that carry sperm.)
“Women are tired of making concessions for men, especially in the bedroom. We have already been through enough letting you wear socks while you penetrate us,” she declared. “So man up, men, and if you can’t do that, enjoy the company of your hands. Vasectomies, one snip and that’s it.”
Several of Handler’s famous friends took to the comments section to applaud her for speaking out.
“This is everything,” Ashley Benson replied, while Joey King responded, “My queen.”
Not all men were thrilled with Handler’s comments, but some agreed with the comedian and shared their positive experiences undergoing the procedure.
“I got one 10 years ago and it was one of the best decisions of my life. I was uncomfortable for a couple of days, but that’s about it,” one man wrote while another replied, “Snip snap was easy peasy! Was on ‘bed rest’ for only a day and no strenuous or explicit activity for one week.”
