Get clucked, the kitchen is closing.
After a decades-long run dishing up chicken and waffles, an Oakland staple is closing its doors for good. Home of Chicken and Waffles announced the closure on its website telling guests its last day to scarf down a plate will be on August 31.
“Thank you for all the years of love and friendship!” The spot wrote.
The closing brings the end of a 23-year long era, as founder Derreck Johnson first opened the joint back in 2004 at its first location on Embarcadero West. It later moved to its current spot on Fourth Street in 2024.
The southern staple was not only known for its soul food but its community outreach as it employed formerly incarcerated workers. The spot also drew high-profile customers like Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris.
Johnson told SF Gate he is “Very happy and excited about [closing].” After 23 years, I want out of the restaurant business. I’m just ready to move on.”
The restaurant did not give a specific reason behind the closure but Johnson told multiple outlets that he is looking forward to the next chapter and will announce more details about the future in the coming months.
Customers flooded to social media after the announcement with lifelong eaters mourning.
“Awwww Derrick’s presence and food has been a legendary comfort to so many folks here! Wishing my frat brother much success and love for what comes next!” One wrote on Instagram.

On remembering what Johnson did for the community, one customer commented, “job well done, you’ve helped sooooooo many of us & helped us become who we are today thank you so much for the opportunity & the love you. Poured into us all we were family & many of us are still connected looking forward to what’s to come ahead.”
Another Bay Area favorite is closed down after nearly 15 years. Pucquio, a Peruvian restaurant in Rockridge, served up its last dish back in July.
The spot announced the shutter on Instagram, stunning customers.
“A chapter is closing, but the memories we’ve shared will last forever. Thank you for every visit, every celebration, and for allowing us to share the flavors of Peru with you. It has been an honor to be part of your story,” the Oakland spot said.
